I'm on my way to Japan, I'll be stationed in Okinawa Japan for a minimum of 3 years, probably longer.

Anyways, I've been looking into Silvia S15's and the Spec-S (non-turbo models) seem to be pretty cheap (in the $5k-$6k range for one in decent shape) and the Spec-R's seem to start at about $10k for a decent one. I was just thinking, with that $5k savings and more added on top, I could easily swap in an SR20 or RB25 and do mods, suspension, wheels, aero, and paint.

Low mileage RB25's with transmission and ECU go for about $600 over there, same with SR20's.

Has anyone done or seen an RB25 put into a S15? I can't seem to find any info, I figured maybe someone from the UK or Australia or Japan could offer some advice. I know I'll be able to figure it all out when I get there, but I'm just trying to do the research now, so when I get there in June I'll have a set plan.

Thanks,Jason

Agree, my buddy paid 4000 USD for a -92 in Japan. (Cost almost $2k to transport here but worth it, looks like new.)

bro your eyes are gonna open up to the fabulous world of jdm cars. Gloria's, crown's, silvia's, rx7's. These are all the old easy cars to get. Even skylines. I would wait till you got on base and look through the classifieds. You'll find a way better deal from one poor e-4 or e-3 trying to get rid of his ride for about $2000 that has been modified plenty. Trust me i know. That's how i got my first r33 gts-t with all kinds of mods done to it. for $1500 94 r33

Well, believe me an R32 GT-R was my first thought. But I've been in touch with several people who are stationed there too, and they are telling me they just aren't as much fun to drive as a well balanced FR car like the Silvias. R32 GT-R's in good shape go for about $10k, but I've seen them in the base classifieds for as low as $6k (a little rough but good running).

Lately though I have absolutely fallen in love with the lines of the S15. I've got almost 4 months before I get there, so I have a little while to decide.

Thanks for the links, I'll check them out!

I'm on a car forum mainly populated by American military and civilians in Okinawa, there's a few guys there with swaps into 240z's mainly SR20's from what I've seen.

Agreed I'd buy a Skyline fix it up and bring it home with me.

Dude,

You are in JDM Land. Forget a hybrid swap, just go with a R32 or R33 GTR man. Heck, Try a FD3s, Type-R, Cedric, Soarer, etc. All of those great cars we can't get here. Why not an NSX! Well, the NSX may be a lil much, but still try a few out!

Well, I wanted an S15 because I really like them, the hybrid idea was just if I get a Spec-S, because I'll be doing a motor swap anyways, so why not get that extra half liter and 2 cylinders.

As far as the GT-R goes, and bringing it back, it's not an issue. Because my job (postal) won't send me to the US, so I'll be overseas for about the next 20 years. As long as I stay overseas I'll be able to keep whatever car I buy, doesn't matter if I go to Germany or Spain or Belgium or Australia, I'll get to keep it. I really have no desire to go back to the US, this is why I joined the Air Force, to see the world.

I'll drive an R32 and 33 GT-R when I get there, I just think that the Silvia S15 will fit me a little better, but that remains to be seen.

Thanks for the advice!

I agree and I see what you're trying to do. I'm in love with the S15 too but if the cost of building an RB25 powered S15 is gonna be greater than a used Skyline costs then it wouldn't be worth it. You can put any engine into ANY vehicle as long as you have the finances. I'm in the Army and I'd go that route too if I was in Japan. But instead I'm stuck at the home of the 101st Airborne (Air assault). I'm jealous! Being in the Air Force is like being a civilian anyway. Plus 2 for you!

Find some dumb E3 or E4 and buy the S15. You will definately get a better deal that way. While you're at it.....buy me a LHD R32 so I can build an R34! You got european connections right!?

you can check the okimar or the classifieds at kadena. I say get the rb26dett build it up and do the s15. Probably gonna be expensive but hey man your in jdm land and that's how they do it. They do it big. Man as soon as you get there try to find us a good contact for used ecu's or after market ecu's for all rb's. I need one like a crack head!

Not my flavor but you would probably own the island with that exotic swap! You'd get run off the road by RB's but you'd eat SR's for din din! Keep us posted on your plans and/or progress.
