Turbos are not my specialty, I basically know how they work, but do not know the correct way to set them up. I recently had my HKS turbo (came with my engine setup) nuke on me probably because it didn't have an oil restrictor. Nobody told me it needed one and I did not know to ask. I do not want to make the same mistake again. I've done searches, but I figure I might as well make my own thread just to be sure I wouldn't be throwing another turbo down the drain.

About to pick up a Garrett 3076 for my RB25 and planning on going externally gated. Keeping stock manifold for now, I know I'll have to get a piece welded on for the wastegate. Basically, what do I need to get this thing running and staying healthy?Boost controller?Wastegate size? Oil restrictor size and where to put it?Anything else?

Alright guys, drop some knowledge on me!

As mentioned your factory manifold can be used and modified to run an external wastegate. Common area for this is above the turbine flange between the runners.

Boost controller, will be needed if running any boost pressure outside the rated spring pressure in which you would've ordered with your wastegate. (ie: if you have a 12psi spring in your wastegate, and you plan only to run 12psi, then you'll be to go) however, it can not hurt to have it controllered or monitored with one.

Wastegate size, 38mm is the common. Fits well in the space given.

Oil restrictor size .035" and to be on the oil feed line going into the turbo.

Get the usual downpipe, dump/wastegate tube, oil and coolant lines, hot pipe, and intake pipe situated and you are good to go in fitting it.

The above is just one of a few routes you may take.

Make sure you run a -10 oil return, you want it to flow well at that point.

Remember, turbo neophyte, what is this? The size of the line?

-10 is the same as 5/8" essentially.

Otherwise, I agree with ricky on all accounts. I have a thread somewhere on my external w/g setup on the stock manifold.
