Im trying to figure out how to get my front crank seal off with out pulling off the oil pump. Ive searched on nico and on google and cant really find anything. I tried using a pick with a hook to get into the soft spot of the seal and try and pull it out and all it did was break off the tip of the pick. Im hoping I didnt scar up the crank or the pump :ohno:

bonus question: how would you go about removing the rear main seal with out pulling off the housing?

It doesn't matter what engine it is, but most seals are removed the same way for me. I use a couple of mini pry bars (basically bent flat screw drivers). All you do is shove them into the seam from two opposing sides (i.e. right+left, top+bottom) and pry at the same time. You might want to put on a pair of welding gloves or something cause it's a knuckle buster when the seal pops out. If you were using what I think you were using (sharp small pick) then that's too small and too sharp for the job.

Tool needed is called a seal puller. It has one end on it with a hook on either side. You start one end of the hook in between the seal and the crank and carefully tap the hook inwards. When you get far enough in you pivot the tool to pry the seal out. Very useful tool. Works on cam seals, crank seals, cv axle seals, etc. Image
