It was a sad dayWorked like hell to get the car ready for last weekend's drift event 5 hrs away. Got there and found I had no boost. Opened up the intercooler piping and intake to find an oil slick. The turbo (HKS 2835 Pro S) looks to have blown the oil seal and welded itself together and I am told it isn't rebuildable. The turbo has probably less than 500 miles and is a few years old. This probably couldn't have come at a worse time

I don't know where to go from here. Why wouldn't the turbo be rebuildable? If it for sure isn't then what should I do; buy another compressor side (is that even possible?). Send it to HKS? I called HKS and have had no return phone call yet. Maybe just scrap this turbo and go with a different one? If it is rebuildable then what is a reputable rebuild shop?

Isn't this what basically happened to Shocker? BB centers are not repairable. Were you using an oil restrictor?

This is the exact scenario that makes me desire to avoid BB turbos.

Sucks really bad dude.

so is there an option to just buy the compressor or do I need the whole assembly? Is the best option just to give up and buy a new setup?

I would consult HKS. I know shocker gave up and swapped turbos.

Were you running a restrictor?

I have been notified, that in fact, your not a dude.

Sorry dude.

Yeah, my turbo blew as well with only 500 miles. My exhaust wheel caught some debris from burnt up spark plug electrodes, and was out of balance screwing the bearings. Turbo wasn't covered under warranty.

Rebuild for a new center section I was looking at $1250 plus shipping.

I opted for a Journal Bearing 67mm. Which is only a few hundred for a rebuild...

I know how you feel, it sucks big time.

HKS will most likely not cover it. They didn't cover my wrong camshafts they shipped me. That had only a few miles on them after I discovered they were for a late late model s2.... All I wanted there was an exchange for the ones I ordered. This wrong cam shaft was the spawn of my problems 2 years ago, which killed my 35r and first motor, I haven't got it right since...

Good luck.

I don't know if it was running a restrictor or whether it had an internal one. Most of the people I talked to at the event don't think that was the problem, but that doesn't mean it wasn't.

I'm probably just going to scrap this and buy a Garrett 3076 and be done with it

I think everybody on here knows I'm a big fan of Holsets and would recomend one in a heartbeat.

With HKS's wonderful customer service and super duper high quality products at bargain basement prices it's no wonder they have so many namebrand nutswingers all over the internet. Seriously, I get sick of people recommending nothing but their **** and saying everything else sucks. Most of the people who say that don't even have one and are still rocking the stock snail! [/endrant]

Anywho, what do you do, drift?

we both feel the same.

chixwithtrix: give Holset a chance, it's inexpensive and very durable. Look on Ebay for an HX35 (very similar to a GT35)

Yeah drifts, and i agree the Holset would also provide good deal of response and some good torque.

Also, i am more than certain your turbo did not have a restricter on it. An HKS turbo is basically a rebadged Garrett center section with slightly modified turbine and compressor housings, and sometimes a wheel, but thats stretching it.

yea, I drift, and I didn't buy the HKS turbo to begin with. It just came with the engine; I would never buy an HKS personally. They are too damn expensive, but it was cool having one for...3 events

I've had a lot of people in the last few days tell me to buy the Garrett 3076 for drift, I will definitely look into the Holset turbos though.
