I have my RB20 torn apart, ready for the machine stop...I was thinking about stroking it...is all you need for a RB22/24 is the crank and pistons from the 25/26?

I believe is an rb26 crank and rods and custom 82mm pistons. You cannot use the 25/26 pistons because there is not enough material on the engine to bore it out this much. Hope it helps. But if you're looking for more power try to use what you have(harness, transmission, mounts) and get an rb25. You'll probably spend less than the build plus parts just to be around the same level. I'm guessing $800 for pistons $300 for crank, $150 for rods, plus $300 on a full gasket set plus whatever in labor and machining. you can get an rb25 engine for $1200 or so and a full auto swap with harness and ecu for $1600 or so. Just throwing out some options. Good luck.

Just buy stronger rods and pistons. RB24 you need 26 crank, rods and custom pistons. you need to bore the motor.

JDM SE-R built one. He is on this forum too but I don't think he post here much. May the force be with you.

Man, too bad it's just a bunch of pictures. Wish it was a little bit more info. Just wondering why you would need custom pistons, and not be able to use the 26's? The stroke is the same with the 25, just bore is different. So I guess what I'm asking is, if I simply get the 25 pistons, and just bore it out to a 22 would it be too much trouble?

Whats your motive for wanting to do this? If you're trying to be original, fine, but it's gonna cost you. And it will cost you a lot more than you think. If you're looking for more power and potential, you need to ditch that 20 in favor of a 25 because hands down thats the smartest financially.

I'm not trying to discourage or come down on you. I just don't want you wasting your time and money :) . But who knows, maybe you'll luck out on the 22/24 and it will work out for you.

The pistons have a different wrist pin height between the RB25 and RB26. They are the same bore.

You can also use RB25 rods with an RB26 crank if you want to save some money. They have all the same critical dimensions, but the RB26 rods are bigger/stronger.

You will need pistons that have the same bore as the RB25/26 pistons, but have the appropriate wrist pin location for the RB20 block. Try putting an RB26 crank, RB25/26 rod, and an RB25 piston in and see what happens. It won't fit, but you can then measure how much it comes out of the bore so you know how much higher the wrist pin must sit in the piston to work.

The reason the RB20 can't make decent power isn't the lack of displacement. It's the crappy head. Turning it into an RB24 isn't going to get you much top end hp wise. For the money (and common sense) buying an RB25 makes MUCH more sense.

+1 on the head.

Not only does it flow much less due to the smaller port size, but because the bore is much smaller it shrouds the valves. Even if you put bigger valves in, the flow coming out of them will hit the sides of the bore and slow it down.

Small bore+ small valves +small ports = bad flow.

RB20s can make power for sure, but I wouldn't spends tonns of money on a RB22 or a RB24, I would just get a rb25.
