WHy are rb20det exhausts so quiet? I've heard a friends rb20det and it is really quiet. He has 3" all the way back w/ apexi n1 catback.

Are all rb20det motors just quiet because of the inline 6 chararistics?

Yup put a bigger turbo on it and it will get a little bit louder. Then if the manifold is cracked it gets really loud.

I know turbo motors run quieter than na but this is ungodly quiet. I'm talking about 3" with apexi n1 catback. At full throttle it is quieter than any stock 240sx. I mean even at wot, you hear the motor/turbo more over than the exhaust. I was just wondering if you guys were suprised when u installed your exhaust or if this is uncommon. I wish I could get a db meter to compare but don't have one.

That's awesome I think. I'd rather hear a turbo spool over a loud exhaust.

But, your question, it's probaby because of that turbo in the way.

Yeah, at first i wanted that deep tone sr but when i heard the rb20det, it was quite impressive. Its a real attention getter, not that its loud, vis versa. Hopefully sometime within the next long months i'll get one :rolleyes

even my rb25 is quiet. with the factory 240 exhaust and cat, it was just funny. the electric fans made more noise than the motor. i gutted the cat and went apexi n1 dual. sounds much better now, but still isn't as loud as my RX-7 TII. I consider it to be a good thing. Think about it, know one will ever suspect you have such a powerful motor. Plus, if a cop pulls you over, he probably isn't going to insist on opening the hood :)

Was not complaining at all. I'm actually happy that its sort of quiet. Its just something odd that doesn't make sense. When you think 3" piping, and then a quiet car... = kinda unusual.

Its odd that no one has ever mentioned it before how quiet it is

yeah it is lol.

i guess the downpipe is going to have to be welded onto the turbo. The turbo itself is cast iron. We'll see how things go. Hopefully I'll have it going friday.

yeah i made my own down pipe. Other big news is that my freind just bought a 90 fastback and he is buying an rb20 for it. and i get to install it, then my brother is going to buy an rb20 in the next couple of months for his 90 fastback. so i will get real good at doing the swap. i hope to get a how to step by step down with pics and everything for all the wiring and the gauge cluster, and make a stickie for it.

if you like it quiet, N1 Dual is supposed to be 7 decibles quieter than the normal N1. It splits into two pipes after the cat and goes all the way back on the same side. I think it turned out nicely, and sounds good.

hmmm... I don't think of mine as quiet by any means. It's actually on the loud side. I'm running a crush-bent 3in. pipe to an apexi N1 muffler. It's really annoying and I'm putting about 60lbs of dynamat in the car just to quiet it a bit.

I have been searching and was wondering what a Nur Spec sounds on a RB25 or RB's for that matter. I have heard they sounds awesome on the SR but what about the Rb's? Are they quiet or loud and/or nice deep sound. Sorry If I hi-jack this thread :)

Thanks,

I'll let you know in a few days. I have Blitz nur spec R but I have to wait for the downpipe to be made. Also its a rb20 so I don't know if theres a big difference in sound.

Dude, that had to suck big monkey b@lls. I guess you are making a adapter plate to be able to put a t28 on

Looks like I might be finally be getting my rb25 in a month or so. (whenever I get my money back from my motor dude that filed for chapter 11 4 months ago)

Hmm...my cheap Ebay 3" stainless steel cat-back sure isn't quiet. I have to leave the back way from my girlfriend's house at night because it's so loud. She can hear me driving all the way until the front entrance, which is well over 1/2 mile down the road. And this is babying the thing (although it is hilly so going uphill is a bit louder).

correction, I guess we Fried 2 rb20det ecu's. Anyways, the mafs wires shorted to the block. So the wires were redone and Hopefully this 3rd ECU will be good

I tried test fitting an SR downpipe up to my RB20 at one point and it didn't look like it was going to fit. Let me know if this setup works out for you.
