Hey there folks, I have an RB20det with what seems like a Vaccuum leak, the idle bounces around a few times before settling out. I noticed that the engine has a hose capped off on the throttlebody, and I was wondering where this hose goes.. should this hose have vaccuum to it at all times? is it bad to have it capped off?

Also, I have a problem with it running extremely rich all the time, I'm thinking to swap out the O2 sensor this week and see if that changes anything.

I want to check the itming too, but how does one hook up a light to this system? is it triggered by one of the wires on the ignition box on the coil cover? I haven't got a manual for my RB20 so I'm struggling a little bit.. Sure could use your :help !

Take a pic of the hose you are talking about. If the hose is really on the throttle body, it's already under vacuum. Most likely, the cap is necessary to keep from having a vacuum leak.

The most reliable way I've found to check my timing is to buy or borrow an inductive timing light from somewhere. The inductive light has 2 alligator clips to connect to the + and - on the battery and one black box looking thing that you clamp over the #1 ignition wire.

The way I like to do this is take an old spark plug wire from somewhere else. I stole one off my KA. Pull your #1 ignition coil out (#1 is the one closest to the front of the car). Remove the rubber boot from the ignition coil, being careful not to damage the spring inside it. Put the spark plug wire over your #1 spark plug like it normally goes. Then connect the other end of the spark plug wire to the spring on your ignition coil. .. a piece of wire comes in handy here. Then place the inductive clip of the timing light over this spark plug wire.

From there just check the timing like you would on any other car. Connecting the timing light anywhere besides what I described has given me inconsistent results. It only takes a few extra minutes to hook up this way, assuming you run with your spark plug cover off. I always do because according to the people in the Australia Skyline forums it helps dissipate heat much better and prolong the life and reliability of the coil packs.

Thanks WGA, that's a great idea! I changed the O2 sensor sensor today and it's running better, but still idling like absolute crap. Time to check the timing and see if that helps.. hopefully I can get it fixed up tonight! I'll post a shot of the hoses I need help with too.

*edit*hmm.. checked timing and it's at 15 degrees. well, I'm getting the problem narrowed down if nothing else!

That sounds exactly how mine was running. Mine idled at like 1200rpm though. It ran really rich and I had to lean it out w/ a safc. I checked everything I could think of and couldn't find anything wrong. Let us know if you figure it out.
