This morning I hopped in my s13 and went to back out of my parking space and right as i let out the clutch I heard a noise coming from the transmission. It only happens when I'm in gear and release the clutch all the way. I'm thinking it might be my throwout bearing but wanted to get others opinions before i tore my only car apart.

I think it's the same one that works on the SR20 trans.

OK, do you know what noise the throwout might make?

Ok, its probably not the throw out bearing. Watch this video, tell me if this is what it is doing. If it is, then it is your main input shaft bearing in the transmission. Take the transmission off the engine, open the cover in the bell-housing and I think it should just pop out...

The T/O bearing would make a whirring noise or light chatter I believe, main input shaft bearing makes like a clunky/chattering noise.

No it doesn't make a sound like that. its more of a whirring noise or light chatter just like you said. I mean its not an all the time thing but I might know what caused it. I have to keep my clutch held in while i'm at a stop light or at a stop because the only way i can keep the car on is if i keep it in first gear. or else it will sputter and die. anybody know what that could be?

That sounds like the T/O Bearing. They only cost $20 to $30, check the RB Cross-Reference topic to find out which one you need at your local auto parts store, or Raw Brokerage might have them.

A faulty T/O bearing only makes noise when starting to press the clutch and when disengaged.

Sounds like a transmission input shaft bearing to me.

seems to have stopped making noise at the moment. Makes me think even more about it being the throwout bearing. Which input shaft bearing cross references with the rb20?

mine had the mainshaft tube that the throwout bearing slides on broke off and had similar symptoms, sometimes it worked fine with no noise, other times it would rattle a little with some whirring and would barely engage clutch fully pressed down.

I ended up having to take my transmission off and weld the aluminum tube back on, it works fine now. and I have a single plate o.s. giken clutch, you gotta make sure its straight when you weld it back on or it'll make your pedal pulsate.

bigfootap, did you ever get this problem figured out? I've got the same issue at the moment. It's not causing me any problems shifting or anything but it's kind of an annoying noise...

Also, when I barely put my foot on the pedal, I get a light squeal that sounds similar to squeaky brakes but not so high pitched. You get any of that? I put in a SPEC stage 2 clutch/pressure plate, new T/O bearing and bushing, and resurfaced the flywheel.
