hey guys, im thinking about getting an rb20det cause that's all i can afford... ...anways whats the pro's and con's to this engine ? cause i found a very decently cheap price for 900$....i'd just like to know from all you rb20 owner on how it feels...and how it performs...what's the good and bad?

thanks for all your help

First, before any engine work.... Roll your fenders. Maybe some UCA's upfront and in the back... haha

I find the RB20 to be a bottle neck engine. Not alot of go, but for a budget build stick with it. Rb25's and 26's will run you alot more.

240's dont have front upper control arms. but seriously, he needs better fitting wheels or overfenders ASAP.

RB20 + limited budget = bad times.

**** any RB + limited budget = bad times.

Sry skyline guy here

RB20 is a cheap engine, and parts are cheap. Shouldn't be a problem. Hell I have enough 20 internals to build 7 engines

if you have to say 'because its all i can afford' you should rethink your swap plans.

x2 Don't expect to just swap it in and expect everything to work right off the bat. You probably need another $5-600 for the things to freshen up the engine(water pump, timing belt, timing belt pulley and tensioner, etc.) and all the intangibles you don't expect to spend money on but will have to.

like it has already been stated, dont do it if you're on a budget. "all i can afford" and "RB" shouldnt be in the same sentence, let alone post. if you have limited funds then you will find out very fast how those funds diminish when trying to swap in a RB into a Schassis car.

x3 i got lucky i traded a stock crx for my car & motor , and i still have a couple g's into my ride and i havent been able to put her on the street yet , i will soon though..

if your on a budget, get a piggy bank if your thinking "RB" .

if not you might wanna consider an sr .

oh yeah ,and do something about the 3" of tire popping out the side of your car ..

That being said, id say the 20 swap is still ~2-3k cheaper than the 25.

for being 14 you sure got a mouth on you. Rb20's are the slowest of the RB's but are WAYYYYYYY to much power for a 14 year old. Save your money for the next 2 years. Then drive your 240 stock for another year and learn how to DRIVE!! then think about swaping a motor. Otherwise i can see u wrapping that car around a tree 3 days after u turn 16

wait

did a 14 year old just assume he knows how to do a RB swap, and tell everyone else, many people who have done them, not to assume?

kid you need to step it back a notch. you cant even drive. its gonna be a hard day for you when you realize you dont know half of what you think you do.

there is no need for a brand new driver (one w/o a liscense atleast) to have a higher HP car. All that leads to is trouble, whether its speeding, wreckless driving, or street racing etx. Get plenty of street time under the car, start w/ suspension mods and have fun on a auto-x course. After you have the car down, plan the swap out. Start saving more and more, cause you will use it for sure. Like said, the RB20 is a the least powerful motor outta the RB series, but still can make good power. Personally, I dont know how anyone could like a smaller displacement motor, hell i'm not even a huge fan of the 2.6l I have now, but with that said, I do love my car. But for what it is, its a torquey lil beast. Good luck. Dont kill youself

---^ Listen to this man.

Leave the KA24DE in there, drive it for 2-3 years after you get half decent at how to work on cars and drive in general. Taking on an RB20 swap without even knowing how to react to something with that kind of power potential is like walking into a mine field.

Read here for a few years and absorb these threads. Dont take everyones post as a fact the moment you read it because there are alot of idiots on Nico. Wait awhile and see if mistakes arise from those problems and learn from others.

Come back when you have to contribute or you can't find an answer after searching for hours on the internet.

he will not take this advice at all. I can see the Nightly News coming on with a story of a 15 year old kid w/o a license killing himself and an innocent family while test driving his newly swapped car... im glad i dont live in CALI

One thing everyone can take away from this topic... all ages:

Swaps are money... doesn't matter if you're swapping a KA24DE for another used KA24DE or VK56DETT ... outside of the engine's purchase price you are buying a black box if it's a used engine you're using as the base of your swap... unless you were the owner of both engines you won't know what's good or bad in the motor unless you do a full teardown... which will also cost money. If it's a second car or not a DD... run it as is should you fell the need to "just do it" and fix it later (not recommended if you'd rather spend more time driving than wrenching). Don't forget RB20's aren't just less expensive than 25's b/c they aren't as powerful out of the box... they are also older

Check out the video I made from when I was at Fuji Motor Speedway in Japan last year

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnmLd8V_ryo

There is a good chance your motor came from a car like one of these... and let me tell you... the reason I'm friends with Steve is b/c I helped fix his SR while I was there and walking by and just happened to notice he needed help. These motors are BEAT on... I have a pit in the piston in my the spare motor I bought to run in my car while I fix my current RB20's blown headgasket... have two engine gasket kits and was going to refresh the spare before I put it in... until I found that

Sometimes you get a good motor like my first RB20 in my first S13... but you're not always that lucky... and even with a motor like that you're going to spend a decent amount of money putting it in if you do it right... even making the mounts, downpipe, and wiring it yourself etc like I did...

So that's my 1.50... just be realistic about what you're doing however you decide to do it

There is more truth in that sentence than the ingredients label of a cereal box.
