Rb20det swap

Hey guys, new to the forum. I just bought a 1989 240sx hatch that already had a rb20det swapped into it. Well on the way home, it over heated and i thought it was just a head gasket. Turns out after removing the head, the bottom end is seized. so i bought another rb20 to swap into it. However the wiring from the original swap is very ghetto so i was wondering if you guys could provide any help w/ my swap. The car had the gts-t sub frame swapped in so no mounts, uses stock KA driveshaft. Was planning on pulling the transmission off, then pulling the motor out w/ my engine hoist. was wondering if there are any hook points on the block or to just use the manifolds.

Currently the car has an upgraded turbo (unknown), fmic, stock dp and 3" exhaust. Chipped ecu. car ran a 12.8@106 at 15psi. I ordered some arp head studs and 440cc injectors. Please offer any advise you can, i'm new to nissans, my other car is an evo and i've been dealing w/ 4g63s forever, clueless on nissan love =P

engine had to be making pretty decent power to run a 12.8...they normaly run high 13's in stock trim.as for the wiring if its ghetto, redo it...or send it to me and i can recondition the harness...just pull the motor and trans connected its much easier, trust me.and wow if the person had upgraded the turbo but not the injectors no wonder it blew...270cc injectors are teh suck.

I over heated my 20 once, a water hose under the intake manifold broke. I thought for sure the motor was done. I changed the hose which was a major pain to get too and it ran like a champ.

so you can pull the engine and transmission as one? awesome, but should i put the head back on and manifolds to use as hook points? or is there a way to hook onto the block

oh and i can't even turn the crank, so i'm pretty sure something in the block is fuxored. I got a whole new wiring harness w/ the new motor and transmission i was planning on using. Thanks for the Input guys, keep it coming =]

with an rb, it's alot easier to pull both (motor+transmission). typically ppl hook to the intake manifold and exhaust manifold, but i hook the strap to the mount brackets instead, because i dont want to streess out the small bolts on the mainfolds with the weights of the rb.

so just hook to the mounting brackets, undo them, undo the transmission cross member, and pull it up and forward, then angle the transmission to pull it out?

MECHANICS RULE: NEVER EVER HOOK UP A HOIST TO THE MANIFOLDS!EVER.

neways, because it can warp the studs and lead to air gaps and leaks, or even break the aluminum on the manifold.

well i pulled it from the engine brackets, but that would be hard to do w/ the head and manifolds on.... i'm curious as to where the actual hook points are. i know on my evo, there's two hooks on either side of the head.

I made two steel plates and bolted them to the front two hole on the intake side of the head, and the last two holes on the exhaust side of the head.

Front being front of the carBack/last being towards the firewall.

sounds like what i'll be doing to get this new one in =] thanks guys. I hear the rb20 heads don't flow very well, any place that sells cams for a relatively good price? worth porting stock exhaust mani?

RHD japan sells tomie cams for a good price. But if your even cheaper than that send your stock cams to WEBCam in Riverside CA and they can hard weld it and grind it to 270deg if you want.

still won't work, motor in, did the 5 lug conversion on the side to try and keep my frustration down. but right now i'm just kinda pissed.

I followed every wiring diagram i could find. All the accessories work, but when i got to turn the key, the starter would just click, so i swapped out starters, same thing, so i went and bought a new battery, same thing. So i swap ecu's, same things

so i tried connecting th starter directly to the battery and redoin my grounds, now it just clicks and everything dies and doesn't come back.

I'm now taking out all the plugs that may interfere from corrosion, and making a direct wire. If this doesn't work, car will be for sale for 4k, rb20det swap w/ upgraded turbo, fmic, 300zx brakes front and rear. 18x8 w/ 255 on rear 225 on front.

Hmmm sounds like still a wiring issue, if you're truly dead in the water on it send your wire harness out to Carl, sure he'd be happy to make sure it was all wired correctly for a fee. You'll have to wait for him to finish my wiring though.

Well it finally cranked... woo hoo, beating the starter w/ a hammer. and re grounding. but some pics!

looks like it's time to rebuild that starter. Nice turbo btw WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better than the stock POS.

thanks guys =] got the exhaust all fitted up tonight, cranked her up for about 2 min to make sure no rattles, but couldn't really keep her running cause of the neighbors, psh who needs to sleep at 9:45 damn kids. Anyways, once my ss brake lines get here for the front i should be able to drive her, just gotta wire the dash now and get insurance!

lol ebay special exhaust =] 200 bucks for cat back... let her run a bit tonight, leakin oil from the turbo line, gotta repace the gasket.

kinda wondering if all 6 cylinders are firing.... crappy cam phone video... but its not a smooth idle, still might be that its got 3 month old gas and a motor than hasn't run for 8-10 months.

I'm pretty damn sure thats 5 cylinders, maybe 4.. I've had so many damn ignition problems with my motor, and I've spent so much time trying to figure out different sorts of misses... I'm pretty confident to say that I'd check the coil packs FIRST.

Actually.. if you havent changed the spark plugs, at least look at them and blast them with some brake clean yah know?

Start unplugging coil pack plugs and narrow down that missing cylinder!

yeah i knew it didn't sound right lol spark plugs are ones that came in the motor, guess i need to search for the part number
