ok this is my first experience with a turbo car. Just wondering if a popcorn crackling noise is normal for my rb20det. It's completely stock except a 3" turbo back with cat. Runs perfect. It's coming from near the exhaust manifold / turbo / heatshield. Any ideas? Bad motor? something needs replacing? Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks.

it happens pretty consistant to be backfire. Unless it's backfiring rapidly. It really does sound like popcorn popping but not as loud, you can only hear it when the hood is open. I was thinking maybe a valve or something. Not too sure.

Maybe loose bolts? Does it get louder as RPM's increase, might be a bad gasket.

It doesnt get louder at higher rpm's. Sounds like metal hitting metal. Maybe the lifters or something?? .. I'm totally stumped.

ok.. i talked to some friends. For you RB guys. He says that it's normal. The noise is the injectors. Anyone experience this?

My injectors are noisy, but they're aftermarket. Put a large screwdriver so it touches the fuel rail, than the other (handle) end to your ear...does the sound get louder? If so, then you've found it.

ok i tried that screw driver thing. i was able to identify the clicking noise that came from the injectors. but this other noise im trying to figure out is more of a rattling. Not knock. it's coming from near the oil cap. the sound decreases on the bottom end of the motor. still no idea, hope it's nothing bad.

p.s. just got the motor and have not ran it hard

What maintenance did you do to the motor before installing it?

Timing belt, tensioner& idler pulley, water pump, thermostat, etc...?

You are in for some fun.

Not to be insulting but you just made your life hell. changing a timing belt with the engine in the car is a nightmare. Believe me when I tell you that the shop WILL NOT pay the labor to swap the belt either...or the valves when that belt breaks....oh well...good luck with it!

Your rattling could be damn near anything from the head not getting oiled properly due to sludge of some kind in the oil ports to bad waterpump bearing, bad timing belt pulley, lifters collapsing from low oil pressure, etc...

He might need to do some valve lashing also. Seeing as how you are going to be replacing the timing belt and such it would be foolish to just pop the valve covers off and adjust the valve lash. That ticking from your oil cap is more than likely lifter tick.

HLA's or hydraulic lash adjusters are on the rb25 and 20 and do not get adjusted. They can get oily crud built up in them and be noisy and not work right. My injectors sound like lifters, but it's not.
