Hey guys, recently completed a RB20DET swap into my 1988 300zx. I've only had the car running for 3 days, and have incountered my first problem.
Motor is completey stock minus a t28 rb25 turbo, with 3" exhuast, k&n import cold air kit and as well as a fmic.
Today one of my rad hoses split, right by my intake too, im not sure if any fluid got into my intake, but its possible.
The shop didnt install new plugs with my swap, and i just got the car back friday night and with the long weekened i wasnt able to obtain plugs, so they arrive on friday . The car didnt pull very hard, because it wasnt tuned yet, and the plugs.
at 4000 rpms, there would be a puff of blue smoke when the turbo kicked in ( turbo was in immacculate shape ) and he said this was due to the plugs.
Today when my rad hose split, the car worked good for a bit, but i drove for about 20 minutes untill i stopped and noticed the leak . I fixxed the leak, but the car still drove like ***. It's now spitting and sputtering, and when i step on the gas it sputters almost to a stall then picks up then sputters again . The turbo is very sputtery, and sounds like crap. The car is now working like a hunk of crap, and at idle there is black smoke, and black smoke when i step on the gas.
Black smoke from what i've heard and read, means it's running rich. Therefore my theory is too much fuel, not enough spark. And with the plugs the way they were, and the engine running hot ( lack of antifreeze?) i believe it may have cooked what was left of my plugs.
Does this sound reasonable? Or does this sound like something else some of you may have encountered. Plugs and a tune are in order for friday evening, hopefully this solves the problem.
Here are some pics and an exhuast clip ( prior to problem)
exhaust clip ... like i said, old gas, crap plugs.
