Hi guys, I'm looking to get around 300 whp out of my rb20. I'm trying to narrow down my turbo choices, and after searching found that a 50 trim t3/t4 with .63 a/r turbine would be a good choice for my power goals and still have good spool. I also see alot of talk about holsets and how they support big power with good spool, so does anyone have any experience on how a hy35 spools on a rb20 compared to a t3/t4, or can recommend one over the other? Any other turbo recommendations? Thanks.

For which turbo is better I'd vote holset. Which one is better for you though? Depends. Both will easily make that hp and spool close to each other. Holset will should be able to make a good bit more hp if you turn it up than the T3/T04e will. Is the T3/T04e bolt on style, and inernal gated? That might make it a winner in my book with such low hp goals.

Actually, a RB25 turbo might get you real close to that # also.

Yea, the advantage to the t3/t4 would be i wouldnt need to weld 1" thick of spacers onto the manifold for the compressor housing to clear the manifold and i could keep it internally wastegated. I know that the holset is capable of higher power levels, but I think i will be content at 300 at the wheels. I've looked at alot of people's rb25 turbo setups on skylinesaustralia and the most i've seen get out of that is about 250-260 at the wheels, so i think trying to get an rb25 turbo to 300 at the wheels might not be achievable. Do you think the t3/t4 would spool up faster then the holset?

I meant are you going to need a new downpipe made, or does it have a nissan flange or a downpipe already made for it?

Doubt it, but no first hand experience with either turbo. Just going off what the DSM guys report.

300 at the wheels? Pshht easy and cheap.

As most people know, the RB turbos are made of ceramic turbine wheels that are epoxied on the shaft.

Well, after 18 years of 100,000+rpm operation the wheels tend to fly off.

So without changing manifolds and wastegates, and fuel injectors, etc, here's the setup I will be using.

The EVOIII 16G Turbo is a killer 2.0 liter turbo that:

-Spools fully (20psi) by 3000rpm on a 2.0

-Will pull to 7500-8000 rpm on the right setup

-Is cheap as hell! ($560 brand new)

-Internally gated (No external setup required)

-Kicks a T3 Super 60's a**!

-Will be perfect on the RB20DET

NICE!!!! I would of went with that if I had know back in the day.

Right now I'm rocking a RB20 with a T3/to4E .63 or .68 can't remember.I'm also running a SSAutoCrap stock style manifold.

A ATP ultimate Internal wastegate (5 bolt to Vband) with a 3" DP.I also ported the WG hole in the turbo to abou 28mm. I saw the other day larger WG Flaps for really cheap, but I'm too lazy at this point to re-do.

But.... car's not running correctly to tell you how it is.

According to Turbonetics diagram it should be good up to 450-500 hp. I'm not gonna take it there, but it's possible if you wanted.

Check the Compressor maps.Google how to read/Plot one and break out the Calculator.

Hey guys, im in the same boat as the original poster. I want 300-350 whp. Ive been reading up on the holset hx35 and like what ive learned about it. The turbo will be going on my s13 with an rb20 in it. The car is a purpose built drift car, so i hardly ever see low RPM. Im an aggressive driver so im not afraid of kicking the s*** out of the clutch to get the turbo to spool. As for supporting mods i have tomei poncams, 550cc injectors, z32 maf, tuned ecu, and a manual boost controller. Im having a hard time finding a good hx35, everything i find is pretty crappy. any help will be greatly appreciated.

The EVO III Turbo isn't that turbine able to be used with ALS?

No, that particular turbo is the Tommi Makinen Edition EVO 6.5.

That turbo featured a Titanium/ Inconel turbine wheel, making it highly resistant to the thermal-beatdown made by ALS.

And those are only $900 or so

Pretty sick turbos for cheap anyways. No external gate required either.

Where did you find your turbo? I have decided on the t3/t4 and i've been looking all over ebay and most people don't even know the trims or a/r's of the turbo they're selling.

Buy it from a turbo shop unless you like rolling the dice.

If you want a brand new turbo check out Master Power. I've heard that they are good. They are Brazillian made.

I've never used them myself, but I haven't heard anything bad about them.
