ok.... so im getting close to solving this mystery. My rb20 is backfiring and popping like crazy in 1st at about 4.4k (sounds like hitting rev limiter), but steady producing about 10psi and spinning tires in the grass. I have 1 question.... my o2 sensor came with the harness broken off the wires, if you are looking at the harness from the ecu which wires are supposed to go where? or is the o2 sensor really even that necessary to have hooked up?

o2 sensor will not cause this problem

check your plugs and timing.

Yes you need the O2 sensor. It will require a 12+ switched (on with the key) a signal wire (sends the ECU the signal from the O2) and a ground (it's 3 wire correct?) Use a multi meter to determine what's hot and ground, then you only have one choice left.

gentle men it should be 12vdc on either the left or right wire and the signal wire is in the middle. Hope that helped!

i have to say that is incorrect. the o2 sensor is part of a series of sensors that determine the optimum fuel ratio for any given situation. if the o2 sensor is inoperational, the car will run rich as a protective device. the popping is fuel soaked exhaust igniting on the turbine housing. at 4.4k rpm and under boost, the turbo will be very hot (obviously) and heated fuel (from the combustion chamber) will ignite on contact. thats why sometimes you will see flames from the tailpipe.

backfiring is most likely from poor ignition or incorrect timing, but not the popping. i am going to say that fixing the o2 will fix your car. but clean your plugs and reset your ecu after you fix it.

I had mine at .8mm and it wasn't running all that great. I talked to themadscientist and he said to open them up to .9mm. WOW...talk about response. The car hasn't run this good since I bought it.

Food for thought.
