OK, so I think the alternator on my RB20 has gone bad.... So my question is...

Are there any other alternators that work without modification?

Here's what I found when I searched:

Either get your rb20 alternator rebuilt or get a 240 alternator. Both the sohc and dohc alternator work but the only thing that is different is the bracket must be modified. There is a ton of info on this if you search. There are 2 places the bracket is mounted to block. One of the holes has to be drilled up so that the bracket and alternator can rotate down enough to fit the belt and the tensioner for the belt. It is not hard just look at it and drill a little. Took me a hour. To get to one of the bolts on the bracket however you must basically remove the water pump pully to get at it. Make sure that when you put that pully back on you have to torque those bolts down a good bit. Trust me they must be tight or they will come loose like mine did and that was bad.~ANDREW~ I don't really want to do any modifying, but I will if I have to (last resort)... but it seems like I've searched everywhere and haven't found anything else excpet "get it rebuilt.." Or X-references for belts.

So please help me! I'm pretty new to the world of cars, and I figure that the only way that I'll learn is to do things myself. I just want an easy replacement though, if possible.

Thanks for trying to help me in advance

Its not as hard as you think when it comes to modifying it. Drilling one hole and possibly having to bend it a tad is all you really need to do. Then take a peice of string, and string it along the pullies and then cut the string, and measure the string if i remember on my friends SR it was around 30 inches or so, which is close the RB20 starter location. Take the string to your local parts store and have them match a belt to that size.

Get one about the exact length or one maybe an inch longer if you have room to adjust it and have slack to tension the belt. Hope that helps. Its what we did on my friends RB20.
