ok so im trying to get my car prepaired for my first ever track event which im extremly exited about btw. I change my rad to a ticker one, bleed the system, went to auto parts store trying to source out spark plugs, came back and see this extremly big puddle of coolant under my car. i check to see if i can spot where its coming from and see that its dripping from the oil pan and i was like WTF. I got frustrated and take it to a local mechanic shop just so i can get it on a lift and inspect better. Turns out its my water pump and now im not sure if ill be able to atend the track which is this sat coming up But anyway my question is....How hard is it to change a water pump? ive never done it, i would get it fixed at the shop but they charge about 260 to do it and funds are low because i bought a helmet, tires and etc... Is there some sort of write up? ive tried downloading the fsm but it doesnt come up.. Is there a gasket on the pump or is it just silicone..any help is appreciated

you have to remove the timing belt to get the water pump off. So you have to put the motor to BTDC, then take the belt off and change the pump. Not hard at all lol. I haven't done it yet but I'm sure with a FSM to show you how to find BTDC you could do it by yourself.

What yellow wrote is exactly it... The water pump is behind the timing belt. You'll need to..

Set the engine to TDC on cyl #1Mark the CAS position then remove the CAS and its bracketRemove the upper timing coverRemove PS and Alt beltsPull the crank pulley off (borrow a pulley puller from autozone for free)Remove lower timing coverLoosen the timing belt tensionerRemove the timing beltRemove the bolts for the old water pumpClean off the block and water passage under the old pumpInstall a new RB20DET pump (RB25 and RB26 PUMP WILL NOT WORK ON THE RB20!!!! *)Seal it with RTV, there is no gasket!Reinstall is opposite of disassembly, but pay special attention to your timing belt tension

I know you're low on funds but if you didn't do this maintenance on your RB prior to your swap, you should replace the timing belt, timing tensioner, timing guide, water pump and thermostat with brand new parts. Don't dig into this without reading that section in the FSM.

*I'll say it again, you need a RB20 water pump and not a RB25/RB26 pump, this is because of a very minor different in the pump casting that will cause the RB25 pump to leak when installed on an RB20.

Click this pic and read my thread on the subject of RB20 vs RB25/RB26 water pumps!

BTDC means [degrees] Before Top Dead Center [of the compression stroke]... He really meant TDC which is Top Dead Center, which is the point when the cyl #1 piston is 100% at the top of its stroke. This is the reference point for your base ignition timing.

You can verify you've got the motor at TDC because the intake and exhaust cam lobes for the cylinder will be pointing away from each other (and there will be no lift on int or exh valves). Also the timing marks on the crank pulley will be lining up with the timing mark bump on the lower timing cover.

One way to get to TDC is to put a long screwdriver down the spark plug hole & rotate the engine by hand until you observe the head of the screwdriver at its highest point. Then verify TDC as I wrote above. Remember there are two "TDC"s, one being compression stroke TDC and one exhaust stroke TDC, make sure you're on the right one.

There are links in the stickies to get the FSM but I know for a fact my buddy just rehosted them the other day. Get the R32 engine manual from here:

^^ Anyone else who needs the manual, grab it now cause I'm going to remove this link in a few days...

While at Autozone renting the puller, grab all of the m6x45mm bolts that they have in stock and a can of pb-blaster for the crank pulley.
