RB20 trans = ka24de trans with different bellhousing?

Discuss the RB20, RB25 and RB26 series engines.

Well, my rb20 trans is sitting on the floor (the one I just got) and it will shift to 1st and 2nd just fine, but that's it. I tried spinning the input shaft and shifting..still nothing. I will take it apart a little soon and check it out, but had a question.

If I swap this bellhousing onto a ka24de transmission, will it work just fine? I think it should, since they're supposedly the same thing, just a different housing.

Any thoughts or facts, let me know.

Thanks,Nick

In fact, the bellhousings are the same length. But sorry, that won't help you since the trannies are 2" different in length. If you put the KA transmission onto your RB bellhousing, your shifter will be located 2" farther back than it is with the KA in the car.

You could possibly cut to make it fit.

if you used the R32 crossmember it would place your shifter forward...then a KA24DE transmission and it would move it back again?

get a ka24e transmission the measurements I took were the same on both trannies..... and if the transmission is 2 inches longer than it should put the shifter around stock location if you don't use a mount kit.

Nope, that won't happen. The reason that the RB shifter sits 5/8" forward of the KA shifter is that the RB shifter is farther from the BACK END of the transmission. If both shifters were in the same locations relative to the back end of the trannies, then RB swaps with R32 x-member would put the shifter right in the middle of the hole.

I repeat: if you use the KA with the RB bellhousing and R32 x-member, your shifter will be 2" back from where it was with the KA, NOT 2" farther back from where it is with the RB!

5/8" isn't much to worry about, but 2" is basically out of the hole.

Hmm...anyway you could do some frankenstein-like internal swapping to get the shift linkage where you wanted it and still the right length?

I wish mine would just shift into gear :(

can you use a KA24 transmission rebuilding kit for the RB20 transmission?
