I'm planning a pretty serious build-up of my RB20 next spring and I was just tossing ideas around in my head of what my goals will be. I'm looking for opinions on how high I should rev it while keeping the hydraulic lifters (assuming that I have a turbo that will be able to breathe at high RPM). Mods will include cams, springs, guides, and retainers. Any input is appreciated, thanks.

rev until it explodes, get another engine and rev it 1000rpms less this time.I would keep it 7500 or less.

Yeah... contact GTR Shop he may have some suggestions. If just street driving I'd play it safe and not go above 7k though.

The car will be used mostly for autocross and hopefully a few HPDEs

I'd say dyno the car with the setup you plan to run, and if the car keeps pulling all the way up to 7,500, then move the limiter up to 8.

The valve train isnt your limitation, its the oil pump putting too much oil into the head and leaving the sump too dry.. If you get serious with revving an rb, I think you should first get a CRANK COLLAR, then some oil restrictors of some sort (not exactly sure of the measurement), N1 oil pump or a later model rb26 pump, I believe, is what you're looking for... Also extra oil drain tubes in the head going back into the sump. Or how bout a dry sump

Of course, none of this is necessary at all unless you have the large cams and the turbo to flow this much air..

Oh sorry, I know I need those mods, kinda thought the crank collar was a given when doing a build. I was mainly wondering if the hydraulic lifters are a limiting factor in any way.

Pretty sure Carl's using the hydro lifters, and spins to 8,500.

main factors in the 20's redline:oil pumpcrank collarvalve springshydro lifters

i spun my stock setup to nearly 8.5k and didnt have any problems with it but 8.5 is really the cutoff for hydro lifters any more and they arnt happy at all.not to mention most oil pumps that are off the shelf can only go up to 8.5k (in my case the n1 pump), and a collared crank is a must if you are going to be spinning her hard.i would put some good springs and do the oil mods (collar, new pump, drains, restrictors) if you plan on revving that high and atleast a set of cams because stock cams kill power past 6.5k.

Thanks, that's about where I thought the cutoff should be w/ supporting mods.
