I've been told that the RB20DET has interchangable parts with the z32 (90+ 300zx). I was curious if this is true..

I've been trying to decide on an engine and now I pretty much have it narrowed down to a SR20 or RB20. ATM I am just trying to figure out how hard it would be to get parts for the RB20, IE if something goes out and I just screwed for the time being?

Any info you guys could give me would help A LOT..

thanks-j

well, just wondering in general.. ANY part, like a waterpump or an alternator, etc. I'm just curious to the avalibility of the parts. Kinda like if I go to a automotive store, am I going to be able to find whatever I need, or will it have to be special ordered? Sorry if i sound extremely stupid (its just natural)... more so, will the parts be easier or harder to find than an SR20?

I know of nothing that will swap between the two.

the guy trying to sell him the RB20 told him that some parts were interchangable between the RB20 and the USDM Z32 VG30DE or VG30DETT. After I told him I have a '86 300zx turbo, he didn't know whether I owned a Z31 or Z32 :-\ . We figured it was a load of bull****, and I guess this proved it. How dependable are RB's? Would it be a PITA to get a new starter or something if his went out? In other words, should someone w/o deep pockets even consider the RB20 as an option, or should mystik be in the market for a SR20?

Parts Interchange....

I *think* the CLUTCH from the Z32 (non turbo) is the same as the RB20. Other things commonly mentioned are spark plugs and oil filters. :D

I found a source in Austalia that stocks water pumps, timing belts, etc. Can not located the bookmark at the moment. I was reading the Skyline forum (Aus) and found a reference to them as a source of parts.

From what I have found to date THERE ARE NO SPARE RB PARTS stocked in the USA! :( Water pump, timing belt, etc all are sourced from Japan or Australia.

ALTERNATOR.... need to check, but should be a common "two wire" L & S (lamp & sense) in addition to the "+" and "-" connection. As such any good rebuilder should be able to rebuild the alternator. Ditto for the starter. (typically only thing wrong with the alternator is front bearing - common item - and thre brushes. Starter -- solenoid contacts & brushes).

so lets say i do an rb swap.. if somethin just happens to go out, the car is out of commission (if its something the usa doesnt stock. ie ALMOST everything). -- until i can order the part and have it delivered (most likely taking forever unless i spend 100$ to 2 day somethin lol..

jeez they make this swap thing easy =p

Kinda pushes me torwards an sr20.. maybe ill just keep my daily driver if i do an rb swap =x

thanks for the info, i appretiate it ;)

Bingo! If your CAS craps out you are going to spend about 400usd plus shipping for a new one from Japan. Or just get SDS and stop playing with ten year old stock junk:D

or actually, how much better are the GT-R injectors compared to the stock 20's??? i know they'll be better for sure, but is it worth the headache of throwing the GT-R ones in and configuring everything or just wait till i can afford some aftermarket injectors......hopin u'll be honest and not try to force a sale on me :)
