Hey folks, I have a couple of questions. I am new to the tuner scene and I am recently purchasing a 95 240sx. The question I have is what engine will be best suited for my car while providing ample horsepower plus the ability to have an air conditioner. I want a daily driver but also a badass car. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking time to read this.

All RB motors have potential. It depends on your power goals and the amount you have to spend. You can keep AC with all 3 engines.

An RB26 can do 300whp without breaking a sweat, but it will cost at least 5 times as much as an RB20 swap. The RB20 can do 300whp too. Venus-Auto.com sells RB20 clips for $1200. Remember the RB20 came in the R32 Skyline which is nearly 15 yrs old. I personally think the RB25 is a great compromise. You have nearly the displacement of the RB26 without the premium price. I'm a KA-T fan, just cause I'm new to this stuff as well. I wont be able to afford an RB26 swap unless they accept a kidney in exchange.

Hang around the RB forums for awhile. The guys on there really know their stuff. But they probably wont help you answer a question like this, as it comes down to budget and personal preference. Welcome to NICO, and good luck with your decision.

Take some time to read and learn. From the way you worded this, I see a hastily done swap that cost you too much and a wrecked car in your future. The "tuner scene"? This isn't the fast and the furious. If you got your car to be a part of some hip subculture, just sell it now. What do you want to do with your car? Just drive fast on the street?

Cut the guy some slack, at least he didn't post this in GenChat.

irq: Search around, both on NICO and the web at large, for some info on the respective motors. Why do you want an RB powerplant specifically?

Look for info on the following options as well:

-CA18DET-KA-T-SR20DET (assorted variations)

You should know what the power outputs, upgrade paths, weak points, and costs are for each of the options. Become an expert before you spend a cent.

Jordan: I had no idea that whole RB20 clips were as cheap as $1200......that sounds tough to pass up. More I think about it....more I want that straight-six sound...

I met a guy name Sean (I forgot his NICO name) with an RB20 at the Snowball stand two weeks. That was the first RB Ive seen in person.

$1200 for a turboed 2L I6 is a steal. Popularity is the only thing that pushes up the price of an SR. Venus sells RB25 clips for $2500, same price as an S13 blacktop SR.

RBs require a little more to install (mounts and driveshaft, I think) but its a much better engine in my opinion. If the KA ever leaves my car, you better believe a 6cyl RB is taking its place...

Does anyone know how much the RB20 weighs in comparison to the KA?

I've heard the RB20 is 65lbs heavier. But, I've also heard the it's 140lbs heavier. I guess I have never found any real proof.

But, it's not too bad. Contrary to popular beleif it doesn't throw off your weight balance too badly.

If you've never swapped an engine before.. I don't recommend a RB. I learned the hard way... i would have been better off with a KA-T or a SR20.

Of the three RB's...RB20 is affordable and fairly powerful... the RB26 is expensive and extremely powerful... The RB25 is a great comprimise of those issues.

RB20 is the easiest to install as you don't need a custom driveshaft. You can use the xmember from a clip, or you can buy a mount kit from McKinney. Wiring is pretty straight forward.

Depends on you budget and mechanical skills, but if you really want to do an RB.. start with the 20 and then you can move up to a 26 when you feel comfortable with it.

If you have other question... search. just kidding... pop into the RB forum and other people (other people than me who know what they are talking) about will help you.
