i have had my engine apart for a while and i had takin the oil pump off to replace the gasket. i had also had the oil pan off as well, so pretty much all the oil had been drained out of it. do i need to prime the oil pump wit oil or will it do it by itself. because we had to pack my brothers oil pump wit grease to prime it, when we had his engine apart. on his V8 gm LT1.

wouldnt it just prime itself as it sits in oil just the same as when you shut off the motor all the oil sits in the pan?

it primes itself

just disconnect your CAS and dry crank it for a few seconds (5) to get oil flowing

if the motor was completely new and the pump was new, i'd probably pack it with grease so the first few turns the pump isn't metal to metal.

on mine, i used a drill powered pump and filled my motor with 5 quarts through an accusump sandwich adapter i had. got a good 25 psi before starting it for the first time.

if you're using a used pump with some oil in it already, just crank it over with no fuel until the oil light turns off, or until you see some pressure on your oil pressure gauge. no worse really than letting your motor sit for a week and starting it.

NEVER PACK IT WITH GREASE!

that **** will go straight into your oiling system. you want grease gumming up the passages in the block from the pump to the filter? BAD IDEA

a few revolutions till it gets oil isnt going to hurt anything. if it really worries you just pour oil into it when you install and hand rotate it.
