if the motor was completely new and the pump was new, i'd probably pack it with grease so the first few turns the pump isn't metal to metal.
on mine, i used a drill powered pump and filled my motor with 5 quarts through an accusump sandwich adapter i had. got a good 25 psi before starting it for the first time.
if you're using a used pump with some oil in it already, just crank it over with no fuel until the oil light turns off, or until you see some pressure on your oil pressure gauge. no worse really than letting your motor sit for a week and starting it.
