Long story short I have two buddies with rb20's that have a ticking sound 1200-3000 when free reving or light throttle.

Both show no signs of bearing material in oil and are up to date for oil changes. I did plugs on one a year ago. Inspected all coils even peeked at piston tops with light. I didnt find Jack wrong with it..... Both have been doing it for roughly 10k and or about a year since they have owned them. Both are daily driven street cars.

 side note: i had an rb in a 95 240----- 4 years ago i put in and wrote all about it here on nico!

I do not recall any kind of valve train tick of any kind but i was 17 and it was my 2nd engine id touched so no seasoned ears. Maybe it did it too........

1) air in lifters or couple bad ones *read rb valvetrain is bullet proof*
2) oil control problem possibly i recall rb's having a crutch in that department ? *been running for a year*
3) rod bearings or broken ring lands *no bearing material in pan*
4) turbo ceremic wheel noisy/worn or exhaust leak doubt it...... *no visible leaks from a glance over*
5) i have no idea they run great pull hard maybe its normal :ohno:

reason im asking is i just bought one of them and am debating a teardown :dblthumb: BACKONTHAT RB 4 years later

could be dirty/clogged lifters from irregular oil changes or just simply worn out from age.
you can try taking them apart and cleaning them...but 24 of them its a long tedious process.

YELLOW: 5w-30 never considered oil weight.... hmm

CARL: yep irregular oil changes is a def. possible as i had met both previous owners and they sold them because they couldnt get them to run right.... much less change the oil!

maybe ill pull the valve covers off and get some trash bags and run the thing with them off so i can pin point the noise*
