i have an s13 which i swapped an rb20 into i finally got it started and along with that sexy exhaust note that came screaming out of the dump pipe i was fortunate enough to blessed with a knock... ... the knocking doesn't seem to be accompanied by any rattling. what i mean is when you hear the knock it sounds like whatever is knocking is pretty solid (no indication of loose or broken pieces flopping around) if that doesn't make sense just ignore it. also when its trying to turn over there doesn't seem to be any knocking

basically im trying to find out if the knocking is a rod knock or if its an issue with a lifter(s). the reason i suggest a lifter issue is because I've done some searching and on YouTube Ive come across a couple videos of other RBs making the same noise and one of them the problem was air got trapped in a lifter and it caused the same noise (loud consisting knocking)

here is a link to my my car http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRXMn8zJpZU (caution it will get loud)

and here is a link to the RB25 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrlJMbuTKJg

please help me figure out what the problem is so i can finally get my baby in proper working order

p.s. what could the cause of the idle problem be???? (watch my video and you'll know what i mean)

any help will be greatly appreciated!!!!! :dblthumb:

Its hard to tell from the short and unstable idle. Finish putting the car together and run it for a while. When I changed some valves months ago i didn't soak my lifters in oil and I had a lot of chatter on my first start up. Do you have an oil pressure gauge?

im gonna say that sounds like a lifter issue to me... rod knock is much deeper sounding and not as frequent as what you had going on... get some exhuast hooked up and let the engine run a while see if it goes away..

As stated, take a video with the exhaust hooked up, but it sounds like a spun bearing to me.

My rb25 has lifter tick and it is NO WHERE near that loud, i would say you have a spun bearing, definitely dont run it till it throws a rod through the block. Get a long screw driver and put it against the valve cover and block and put it up to your ear and see where you can hear the noise through the screwdriver at.

ya i think i was just in denial about the knock :chuckle:

im pretty sure the knock is coming from the 1st 3 cylinders im leaning more towards the number 1 cylinder but we will see

im going to try and find out what i can, possibly on Thursday

i was hoping to know by now whats knocking but i ended up having to spend the weekend fixing a different car.

i have finally confirmed the the knock was indeed a rod knock :frown:

the rod bearing on #2 was reduced down to a pile of dust

im still dumfounded as to how the crank was not completely f*** on this

any recommendations on what bearings i should put in

You need to get the crank checked out and balanced. Slapping in a new bearing won't help. If you just want to drive then buy another short block it would be cheaper than a rebuild.
