I still think I have a set of junk coilpacks, but here's my problem:

The car starts up smooth, drives smooth but once i get to about 5k rpms, the car will pull just o.k., not like it should, it will sputter, pull, sputter, pull hard.. then it's at redline.

Well, before this, the car would hit about 4k rpm and just buck and not climb any more, so I taped the coil pack boots and braket, and it helped a ton, but it didn't fix my problem.

So I bought another set of coilpacks off a good running engine - put them in.. it helped clear it up some, but it still pops out the exhaust at higher rpm (unburned fuel - no spark - hot exhaust) yaddi yadda..

So is it possible I got another set of junk coilpacks, or should I look elsewhere?

I'm running the stock r32 skyline pump, so it's matched for the engine and should be at correct fuel pressure - not rich like with walbro

holds 18 on vaccum gauge

stock tune, front mount, pod filter, full 3in exhaust - so it shouldn't throw the stock tune off with just those parts.

I'm lost - what steps should I take to test components and get this thing running 100%?

Hey Carl, when can I come over and let you wave your magic wand over this damn thing and make it run good haha

Take all of the packs out, and use a drem on the inside of them, replace the springs if need be :-)

Thanks for the insight. So your thinking that there may be some oxidation built up on the springs making poor contact? is that a common problem?

yep... if the hesitation is around or after 4k, it is most likely that...

read it on skylineowners.com or skylineownersforum.com..

they said, even if the pack looks clean, go in there with a dremel, and notice the day/night difference after you put it all back in :-)

when you say dremel the coil.. what exactly am I doing, just cleaning the spring inside it?

Also, when I said it starts up fine.. it does, but it takes 2-3 times to get it started with a slight tap of the gas.

how do I set my tps? Im ignorant to some of this stuff, but I have voltmeter and im willing to learn!

The idle adjustment is on the end of the intake mani, towards the firewall...

you take a dremel and clean the inside of the pack after taking the spring out...

Ok! Today I set my idle and checked my tps. It turned out fine. I replaced my coolant temp sensor and now the hesitation is more distinct and normal

The car will run great, and about 5k rpm, it will sound like the car is dropping a cyl or 2 and running like a firecracker - so either im not getting enough air - too rich and fouling out my spark, or im not getting spark at the higher rpm.

So things I need to check/replacedirty *** air filterclean mafreplace 02clean every connectionrun a few more ground wires

What are your spark plugs gapped to? I suggest checking that ASAP. Try getting them as close to .8mm as you can, experiment with it a bit and see if you notice a difference.

Also, when Acecool says clean the inside of the coil pack, I dont think he means the actual INSIDE of the coilpack. He is refering to the area where the spring sits, you can access it by pulling the rubber boot off and then just pull the spring out. Tug a little bit, it will come out! Then take a small wire brush (dremel attachment) and clean that area out. Just clearing this up for anyone who might read this and be a bit confused about it.

It is good to do when your coilpacks sat in something like this for a long period of time:

Exactly, take the rubber boot off! :-)

So just remove the boot completely? Wouldn't there be a problem with the arc from the spark jumping to the bracket?

take the boot off to dremel the inside where the springs sit :-)

Josh

Then put them back on..

if you have to give it slight gas while you are starting it 2-3 times then it could be timing/cam angle sensor issue.

because on my rb20 my cam angle sensor is all messed up and I do have to give it slight gas to start it.

so that could be something else to think about but do the coils first what everybody else is telling you.. heh its much easier.

hey man, i know this doesn't really deal with coil packs but check ur intercooler pipes. i had a sputtering problem when i hit boost too. I replaced all my intercooler pipes and fixed all my boost leaks and have had no problems since. just an idea.

Yes I do need to check timing first of all.

I'll pull my bumper back off and check all my couplers and make sure if that doesn't clear up my problem.
