RB20 Fuel Dampener?

Well I've got my fuel pump turning on/off problem fixed. My ECU is borked somehow and another problem I had is that my SOHC FSM's wiring diagram for the fuel pump elay was WRONG but I digress.

The problem of my car running to rich remains. I can start it up (with a working ECU) but it runs so rich the exhaust is thick with black, unburnt fuel and dies quickly if I don't continually rev it. I have checked connections for my MAFS, O2, Head Temp, CAS and pretty much anything else I could see. All my IC piping is tight and I am aware of no vaccuum leaks. ECU shoots 55 all day.

My question is this, did some (early) RB20's come without a Fuel Dampener (the regulator-type thingy at the rear of the fuel rear connected to the fuel feed line)? Mine lacks one and it looks completely stock but Justin's (Project240) later year (no RB20 stamped on the front cover) RB20 has this dampener doo-hickie and his has no problems like this. I am runnign my stock FPR at the moment which reads about 40psi which while a bit over what it should be, shouldn't be enough to kill the engine like it is. We drove Justin's RB with stock FPR and it ran fine. But just as security, I borrowed his new, tuned-for-his-Rb20 Nismo FPR to use on my car but only to suffer the same results.

So in closing, if anyone can lend some ideas as to why my freakin' engine is dying like this or where I can buy an RB20 ECU (or how to fix mine), I'd be very grateful.

Thanks-Blake

I can't tell you which models have the dampener, but it is irrelevant anyway. You're running extremely rich and none of the things you mentioned will cause that (forget MAFS, O2, engine temp, CAS, and intake piping). At engine start-up, none of those things are critical, especially O2, wich isn't read until it's hot.

Sounds more like you've got a jammed injector or fpr to get that much fuel. If your ECU is screwed up then of course that could cause all sorts of inexplicable behavior.

Well even with the working ECU in, it had no codes.

And how do I go about checking this possible injectors problem? Just pull 'em and clean them or what?

You could pull the injector plugs one at a time to see which is causing the fuel to dump. The engine should miss each time a plug is pulled. If nothing happens then that one is probably the culprit.

If they all cause missing, then look elsewhere. Is the vacuum hose on your fpr connected?

I had no codes, even tho a wire on my maf was shorting. Check the signal wire from it for voltage, should be .5 with key on not running, and 1.1 with it idling. It's very important, make sure all maf wires are doing what they're supposed to..does it rev over 2500 rpms? If so, then sounds like a big vac leak.

Do you have a diagram or know which wires are what for the RB20 MAFS? Because I have no idea what I need to check or how. Sorry. =\

http://www.meggala.com or http://www.rb20det.com have good info on the maf. Get the ecu pinout from the 2nd link.
