I'm in need two intake cam caps...

bent two and am not to pleased with myself.

I was wondering if i put some heat on it and try bending it back if it would be kosher.

I'm pretty sure you just trashed your head unless you can find a machine shop that does line boring/honing. I can get you the caps easy enough though if you want.

*Edit--I know your not thinking about it now, but if you want a whole head, I can get you one if you let me know quick enough. I've had to get two of them for two different people for the same reason as you. I know where a RB20 is sitting, but they are going quicker and quicker these days.

just for S&G's how much would it cost to get them from you?It would be the caps in the middle

Also what would the cost be for a head?

Caps probably $25. Head, probably around $300-$500 shipped. I have to go to the junk yard and haggle with them on the prices first before I know. Shipping on the head is usually just over $100 too is one reason it's so much.

Yup, sure do. Just check with me before you send any $ so I can make sure the car is still there. They rotate quickly.

Your head is finished... You CANNOT replace cam caps... I don't even think you can reasonably line bore it... Cams don't use bearings like the main journals do.

What would be the outcome of just replacing two caps...

If its a lubricated cast iron to alum. contact yeah maybe it will have a different wear pattern on the cap, but would it be detrimental to the engine?

I guess the whole point of line boring would be to have an equal amount of room between cam and cap in which i can see the effects if not prop done. But would the difference be so great that it would make the cam wabble or seize cam to cap?

Not saying that I want to cheep out, but before buying I want to know both sides...

If the wrong cam caps are used, the cam and cap will grind into each other. I don't think i need to elaborate further on why this is bad for your motor.

As for line boring, this most often results in an enlarged bore. With the mains its fine because you can run oversize bearings. But for cams, there are no bearing and there are no oversized cams. Also you would have to find a machine shop with the proper tooling. If they have to buy new tooling, they'll either turn you down or charge you an arm and a leg. Either way you should call up your local machine shop first, they can probably explain a little better than I can.

Just out of curiosity, how does one bend a cam cap? They're like 1/2" thick!

by taking off the cap bolts one at a time/not evenly,it bends the bolt hole to where it clamps on the bolt...had a friend helping and forgot to mention it...

Ironically no. The only R32's I've found are SOHC and the only R33's have been n/a RB25's. One will pop up soon I'm sure. They always do.

The machine shop will grind off anywhere from 0.5-1mm on that mating surface of the cap to the head. Then they will line-bore it, with just barely touching the lower journal. I am having that done on my head as we speak as two of my caps/journals were buggered.

Another way is to weld aluminum onto the journal, then line bore it that way as well.......

I'll be in Poland in about a week flying there next Friday 9-11-09 and you know what happened on 9-11-01

Anyway I'll be looking around and see how I like it, last time I was there it was 10years ago. I was 10 when I came to USA

How are the prices for cars over there in Japan, you know R32-33's and S chassis 13's-15's. Cause if I could get a nice GTR32 and ship it to Poland. I would go back in a heart beat. Even tho I'm a US citizen now .

Anyway back on topic.

P.S. your R32 is t!tz

Thanks! I'm swapping back in a stock RB25 right now and it's already sold. I'm back stateside beggining of Oct. Clean stock 32 GTR's go for around $6k-$8k, 33GTR's $14K+, and 34's I don't ever see for sale. 32 GTSt's are around $2k-$3k clean and stock, 33's $3k-$4k, and 34's are about $7k+ for a 5 speed manual 2 door. I wasn't talking about slushbox or 4 door failboats for any of those prices.

I've never been to Poland, but it's #1 on my list after I get back and get a ATC job. Can't wait.

And back on topic, I should get the caps tomorrow morning. It's Obon right now in Okinawa so everything is freaking closed all week

Best color scheme I've seen on a garage built rb20. Sorry to thread jack but, CJmartz, any chance you could get a rb26 coil cover and cam cover to jump in your tool bag. Need them for future carbon molds. Maybe I'll trade you a carbon 25 coil cover for them, shipping's on me.

LOL, sorry, you NEVER see GTR's in the junkyards with engines or any of the good parts still in them. RB26's are about as rare here as over there.
