Now that I have my head completely apart and cams removed to get the face resurfaced, I'm wondering how one goes about removing the valves. I guess I can't really see how you get at them and what exactly holds them on. I see a small retainer piece on the top of the valve that holds the spring retainer down, but can't tell how one would go about getting that off and back on again.

Can anyone who has done this fill me in?

some parts stores sell a tool for removing the valve springs while the head is still in the car, thats your best bet to get the springs out.

If you're taking it to a machine shop, let them do it. They will have all the proper tool and know-how.

While your head is there let them do a valve job since it won't be that much more and it will prolong your head life. Plus they will be able to tell if your valve seats are worn or you need new valve stem seals, etc, etc.

Have the machine shop do it. I removed my valves but I knew it was almost impossible to reinstall them without the proper tool.

You'll need something like this

The part that will sit on the retainer needs to be the right size so that 1) fits in the hole 2) you're able to stick your fingers in it put the clips on.

If you want to do it yourself here is the tool that I use.

Snap-On valve spring compressor...

All you have to do is put a folded rag underneath the valve your working on, compress the spring, then pick out the pair of collets with a little magnet. Then you can remove the retainer, spring and valve

Installation is easy also. Just place the collets in the retainer and place on top of the spring. Compress down the spring while using a finger to hold pressure down on the collets. If the Spring is compressed down correctly the collets will seat themselves between the retainer and spring. This will probably take you a few trys but you'll get it.
