I'm looking for any help with information on swapping an RB25DET motor into a 280Z. Since the 280Z is fuel injected I shouldn't have to switch out the gas tanks. I'm looking for someone who has done this or knows where to find information. I've looked online and tried to find some articles about it but not much luck so far.

What do you need to know? Pretty much everything you need to know is on HybridZ. Though, unfortunately the search is screwed up right now. It's only finding more recent stuff (which isn't much concerning the RB), however there is a TON more RB to Z related info from awhile back that it won't find until the search is fixed. I'm starting an RB swap into my '73 240z at the moment and I understand pretty much everything about the swap so let me know what you have questions about.

You can buy mounts from BradD on HybridZ for $100. That's what I'm doing since I'm lazy. ;) Also, you can get the 200zr oil sump from Mckinney for $300. With that, you can get the engine bolted in, and you would just need to get a custom driveshaft and make your own transmission mounts (not hard, you can modify the existing one). That pretty much takes care of the main mechanical parts. From there it's just custom plumbing, exhaust, gauges, and wiring.

As far as wiring, I don't have it exactly worked out yet but, if you know what you're doing it's just a matter of sitting there with the schematics for a few hours and figuring it out.

One other cool thing to note is that the Vg30dett Z32 transmission is basically the same internals. With an Rb25 bellhousing, the rear half of the transmission can be bolted up to an RB! Supposedly it's that simple and the input shaft, etc works properly without any modifications. I'm going to try and go this route if I can just find someone with a Rb25 R33 GTS-t bellhousing.

ok i'm very interested in putting a RB motor (most likely a RB26DETT ) in my 240Z and i was wondering about the transmission. i dont want it AWD so would i need to mod my existing front end at all to fit the RB transmission or what problems would i run into by installing the transmission that comes with the RB motor? since i would need to get ride of the half shafts for the front drive of the transmission, what problems woud i run into with that and can i (if any) fix problems that would appear.

Well, basically you can't use the rb26 sump/transmission at all without a lot of modification, but there's no point in keeping it anyways. What you do is you use a gtst transmission. The r32 (rb20) and r33 (rb25) gtst transmission's both work. However, the r33 gtst transmission is a lot better and can handle much more power than the r32 transmission. These transmission's just bolt right up.

As far as the sump, you have to make a custom one or modify an existing one. You can use a 200zr, which is a Japanese z31 that came with an rb20, sump. The 200zr sump is a rear sump design, which will clear the Z sway bar. However, it doesn't clear the rb26's main bearing caps, so you have to modify the sump to clear them properly. I believe you also have to modify the oil pickup since the sump is different, though, I've heard that the 200zr pickup is a direct fix for this problem (not sure).

I think your thinking of a R200 diff. He is refering to a Z31 300 fairlady Z car that was not sold here in the US.

That car came with the RB20det motor, and had the rear sump we need to use the RB series motors in our first generation Z cars.

BTW, forget about getting one from McKinney motorsports, I've been told "they're on order" for ever. There has got to be another way to purchase one of these.... anyone know the part # ? I think if that was known, a person could order one from other Nissan sources...
