Hello,

I have an rb20det with stock 240sx radiator and a weak electric cooling fan. I did a drift in the parking lot and peeled and massively smoked out and afterwards i noticed a huge loss in engine response/power. Is this from the auto transmission being to hot as the fluid circulates into the radiator or engine overheating? I defintley do not want to overheat this engine. Is this because my auto transmission fluid is to hot or engine overheating? Suggestions?

Tony

you should allow the engine to cool down after a hard run. probably a more efficient radiator would help.

a turbo timer would help. I am running the stock radiator with dual 12inch electric fans(Puller). I have been driving it to work and back for the last two weeks without any problems, but I think having a turbo timer that would keep the fans running is one of my next mods. The koyo radiator and pusher fans is probably a good idea as well. I thing $350 for the radiator, and 220 for the fans is a good investment you should consider.

YOU NEED A GOOD FAN, ECSPECIALLY IF ITS PUSHING!

IF YOUR HAVING ISSUES WITH COOLING GET A TURBO TIMER AND A COPPER RADIATOR (BEST MATERIAL FOR RADIATORS). I ALSO RECOMMEND NOT HAVING THE FAN ON A TEMP SWITCH BUT ON WITH IGNITION AT ALL TIMES.

To see if your engine is overheating, it should be pretty easy to look at the coolant level in the overflow reservoir. Also feel around...does stuff feel overly hot iniside the engine bay?

My car used to run a bit hot before I got my FMIC, but afterwards it was defintely heating up too much (although the temp gauge never showed warmer but I don't trust that thing too much). To help this I added a bottle of Redline water wetter to my coolant, replaced my stock A/C condenser fan with a Permal-cool high performance 12" type mounted as a pusher that comes on with the ignition switch. I also have a backup A/C condenser fan controlled by the stock R32 thermostat in the R32 radiator I'm using, but it's yet to come on since adding the perma-cool unit. After these additions the engine was running noticably cooler, but to help things even further I created a cold air box for my pod filter. I just got some aluminum and some insulating tape stuff (found at Home Depot...forgot exactly what it's called but it's used on ducting and hot water pipes I believe). I completely enclosed the pod filter except a hole in the bottom where dryer vent connects to a hole in the bumper to provide cold air.

This GREATLY reduced the temperature of my intake charge. Before the pod filter would be hot to the touch, now it is always very cool. It's a nice little performance booster as well as increasing reliability.

The above only applies if your engine is overheating. If it's your transmission fluid, get a transmission cooler and maybe some better fluid? What fluid are you currently using? You have changed it since you received the motor, right? Who knows what condition that stuff is in. I remember you posting before about how you were drifting and thought you burnt your transmission fluid. Surely you've replaced it since then, corrent?

If your transmission fluid is getting hot consider getting an extrenal transmission fluid cooler. Also I bet hood vents would do wonders (Not sure if that's your style or not but it would help reduce under hood temps.

Yeah I am thinking of buying an external transmission cooler. I mean I dont really know if my engine is running hot or if my transmission fluid is overheating. I heard transmission fluid too hot can cause auto transmission failure. I dont want that to happen. The transmission fluid looks clean. Its a nice red color. My old transmission fluid in my ka24de auto transmission was black believe it or not! I think that burnt smell from before was the tires. Ill probably invest in a tranmission flush once i get the cooler though.

Thanks everyone for the replies,

Tony

Hi,

In terms of the RB engines, yes, they do run quite hot compared to the other Nissan engines.

I would recommend Fluidyne, as McKinney has had problems with the Koyo stuff. We are currently running a Fluidyne radiator on my RB26DETT motor buildup we are doing.

In terms of fans, I would recommend modifying the core support a tad to allow 2 12" pusher fans. We are working with Flex-A-Lite at the moment to try to come up with something for the RB 240's, I'll keep you guys updated.

If you would like to talk RB's, feel free to call me at 501-230-1343, my cell phone. I will be on vacation in Destin, FL til Jan. 5 and I'm actually bored being away from the shop. Lol!

I like fluidyne as well, but I have never seen one for the S13 240s. do you know what problems they have had with the Koyo's?

i have a watertemp gauge on my rb, what would be the ideal tempeture the motor should be at?
