My friend has had an RB20DET swapped S13 since he was in high school (4 years ago) and it has never once run. Not because of an issue with the motor, but because he never finished the swap! After a few beers one night, I told him I would help him get it running. Apparently the engine is in the car and he has most everything necessary to finish, but he sucks at wiring. Certain maintenance items need taken care of, but in terms of completeness the swap just needs to be finished in regards to wiring.

That isn't why I am posting. I don't think the wiring and maintenance will be too difficult given the plethora of information available on these forums. What I need to know is what should be we pay attention to or do for an engine that has not been run in over 4 years? I know all new gas in the tank is likely necessary, but what else? I am not sure what is necessary and what precautions need to be taken.

i'd probably put a cap full of oil into each cylinder and crank it over a bunch before giving it fuel to start.

make sure you have fresh oil in there and check the hoses to make sure they aren't dried up and cracking.

once it does start and you get everything up to temp, drain all the fluids and get all the old gunk out.

definitely get new gas and drain the gas tank completely

make sure the water pump is still good too, but you should be doing that as a maintenance item

overfill the crank case with oil, let it sit overnight and turn it over by hand with the plugs out and a cap full of oil down the bores...this will recoat the bearings with oil and prevent them from spinning, also make sure to build pressure with the starter and plugs out before you're ready to start for the first time this builds oil thru the whole system.as for wiring, there are guides or services out there your choice.if you overfill the crank case be sure to drain off the excess before first start...

Sounds simple enough. gawdzilla, we already had plans to replace pretty much every hose on the engine, but thanks for bringing that up. I'll be checking the water pump now, also, as per your suggestion.
