ok, heres an easier question. does the rb26 have to be tilted and off center?

all the skylines i see have them tilted to the left and off center.

is there a reason for that, or can it be installed straight up and center with cusom mounts?

i noticed the way it sits is for the water pump fan to center with the radiator, but if its eliminated, is there any reason why the motor can be centered and upright?

Thats just the way Nissan felt they should sit in the engine bay, I am sure that mounts could be made to straighten it out, but the shifter would also rotate towards the passenger side of the car possibly making it REAL hard to hit 5th or Reverse...

yeah, that what i was wondering, if the transmission sits straight up at that angle. i guess it has to stay close to that position so the shift pattern wont get screwed up. [5-R]

maybe if the shifter's cut and rewelded at an angle equal to the motors tilt.

[you know what i mean, straighten the motor, and angle the shifter toward you]

Why would you want to change it anyway? Just curious. If you cut and rewelded the shifter, It seems to me that it would make the feel of shifts really weird, but you might be able to do it.

steering column. heres a hint. i dont have a 240.

i just looked over it, and the motor is centered, its just the tilt that makes it look off.

yea, but why does that matter?

is the colum hitting the downpipe?

basically room, and also clearance for the twins, so i dont have to top mount. im getting all my info in order before i start buying stuff i dont need/cant use.

im trying to get it all ironed out before i begin in a few months. im doing the work at a relatives house with all the equipment i could need, and i dont want to get hung up in the middle of the project.

lol you think rotating the engine will be easier than just getting a top mount manifold for twin turbos?

no, the point was to gain whatever clearance i could between the shock tower, steering column.

its got a vg30de in there already, so if the rb is centered i think it would give me slightly more room to work with and not have to top mount.

as long as its upright, i think i could squeeze a custom downpipe between the motor and steering shaft, and not need manifolds also. the vg is alot wider than the rb, so im just trying to gain whatever space i can.

i dont think you understand the logistics of rotating the motor tho.

custom mounts (all 3) and a custom shifter would probably be the least of your problems doing that.

moving the turbos would be a much much smarter idea.

its probably only 15 degrees off. im gonna need custom mounts anyway [motor and transmission] so having the shifter cut and rewelded at that angle wont really be an issue. the car is auto now, so im gonna have to cut the transmission tunnel for the shifter, so it shouldnt be a problem.

ahh, its just speculation till i get the parts together, and do test fittings. thats what its gonna come down to.

yeah, i have the car sitting. i got it as a project because my friends mother bought it off the showroom floor, and she moved to vegas, so i bought the car off him. i didnt even know they existed before i saw it. i had previously owned a 2nd gen acura legend, and i always dreamed of turboing it but its tight *** hell under that hood, so that idea was promply shot.

when i saw the j, i wasnt impressed with the styling, but it was comfortable, RWD, and had a VG30DE. so i said "what the hell, might as well give it a shot"

i was originally going to go VGDETT, but ive heard everyone talk about how much of a pain that motor is to work on considering how tight it is under the hood. so, what better for the "wow" effect than a RB 5 speed? also, the rb's dont have the torque of the vg's which is a good thing in a RWD application. i dont wanna be racing the damn thing and just light the tires up instead of going forward. and how do you argue with a 8k rpm redline?

i got most of my setup figured out. hopefully ill have her running by late spring with A/C and all...

and also, your not far from me at all. i know once i got it going, im gonna go driving off for hours with no destination, so we'll definately meet up. im gonna be building it at my uncles house, 15 minutes from exit 16 I87 so youll probably be the first on nico to see it.

Which RB are you going with? Only the RB26DETT have twinturbo, if you really need clearance, just get a RB25DET and do a turbo upgrade. You'll end up with the same hp and more clearance. Good luck with your project.

i wanna go rb26 just because i want to keep it twin, and also i can get turbo's equivalent to the GT2530 for half the price[still garrett GT].

they have a slightly different compressor output [three bolt]and a slightly smaller exhaust A/R. they are the stock turbos from the mazda protege turbo. [the turbos im talking about are .60 and the gt2530's are .62 or .64]

also, the J30 is a front sump oilpan, like the rb26.

if anybody is interested, they are brand new from Garrett. unlimited supply. the power output is identical to the GT2530 [320 hp]

theyre smallish, so there no good for single turbo guys though.
