I know for a fact that the KA trannie will bolt up to the RB20DET without switching the bellhousing. I have done it twice now on a RB20DET and RB20DET AWD. The shifter does sit further back roughly 1-1.5". On a regular RB20 there are only 2 bolts that don't match up which was fine with me. On the AWD version 4 bolts don't line up which can cause problems...

well since my transmission decided today that i no longer need 3rd, 4th, and 5th and that 1st and 2nd and sometimes reverse are sufficient enough. So it looks like this weekend i will be taking the rb20's transmission and comparing it w/ the sohc and figuring out how to get 6 gears back.... wish me luck

wait a minute, are you saying that the bellhousing to engine bolt pattern and starter placement on the KA and RB bellhousings are the same?

in reply to wulfgangs somewhat obtuse observation of this forum I would be happy to clear up these issues. so hear goes

1st. I have the ka transmission on my rb20det with no frame or floor pan mods.

2nd. This does require a custom drive shaft unless you use the s14 drive shaft in which case it will fit but will also put undo pressure on your transmission and can cause premature wear on certain bearings.

3rd. The internals are almost exactly the same and swapable from housing to housing. the only real difference is the input shaft especially the bearings. (they are not as strong on the KA)

4th. I personally have done this swap and do not think it is worth the time or hassle.

So there ya go Do what you will with it.

This is somewhat off topic but what slip yoke will fit with the rb20 transmission? Other than the obvious rb20 slip yoke, will the ka or sr20 fit?

Just to share, after testing and moving away from a 240sx KA24e project, i got a RB25 Neo from a Stagea, this is what i found after testing the parts:

- KA Flywheel bolted into the RB25, hence the clutch i was using and pressure plate should work.
- KA Bellhousing bolted in 5 bolts (2 on the bottom had to be drilled, all the ones on the Starter side didnt fit) So i only have 5 bolts grabbing it.
- RB engine doesnt have a Starter mounting point, so i tested it and i plan to use 2 ring spacers to bolt it against the transmission, it should work.

Still havent put the transmission on it, just the bellhousing, but as it looks, its going to work.
