It seems as though you cant seperate the transmission from the motor while it in your car. Is it possible to unbolt the cross member to get to the upper transmission bolts? Or how hard is it to try it with just undoing the transmission if there is room?

its tight against the firewall. just pull the motor and transmission in one shot, its alot easier.

drop the engine...i would just drop the crossmember to the ground with the transmission and work on it like that. Then pull it all back up and bolt it on. It's hell to get to the top bolts on a KA engine+transmission in the car stock...let alone with an RB.

Pretty tight. Like they said pull or drop it together. But I have seen the Rb20 transmission pulled and put back with it in the car in a 13. But to put back needed a little body management.(HAMMER)

The only real way to get them apart, with the engine still installed, is to pull the head on the engine, that way you can loosen the motor mounts and let the whole block roll back into the tunnel. I found that out after I had the head blow up on my RB25DET and pulled the head first.

Well the motor is not in the car yet. Im waiting on a clutch from japan. Its going to be a while and I just want to get it all wired up and running.
