I have a 2003 M45 with about 60,000 miles and unfortunately out of warranty.

Just today I noticed when I press the brake pedal about half way I can hear a dull plastic sounding rattle coming from the shifter console? It is really more pronounced when the car is in neutral, but it still happens in D or R. I know it doesn't sound right but I can actually feel the rattle in the shifter console if I put my hand on it or even on the shifter knob.

When I press the brake pedal it feels like their is a cable connected from the pedal to shifter console... Again I know it doesn't right but it's the only way I can describe it.

Could something be broken or loose? Any idea how difficult it is to remove the shifter console plate/trim so I could get a better look?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can offer.
