For some reason, my car rattles at around 2700-3000 rpm. Is this the cat heat shield, transmission, or what? It's very annoying and makes my car sound like a POS. Any advice may help.

Hehe N.V.H. demons:asthanos eh? I had and still have lots of those. I removed my heat shields and that got rid of the most obvious one outside the car, so now it doesn't sound like my transmission is about to fall out from under it to the casual passerbye, I also had a vey annoying rattle from inside the car, sounded like it was inside the dash around my instrument cluster so I took the whole dash out of my car (which was a PAIN IN THE A$$) I drove it around without any gauges or dash and it still made the noise. GRR.. so I got to looking and the bracket where the throttle cable goes thru the firewall at and also is the back stop for the gas pedal was rattling at a certain frequency, so after a few peices of dynomat it was back to quite tranquility. Still have rattles in my doors and trunk area though. I am getting more sound deadening material here soon to fix them though.

the heat shield rattle is minor. I just found out that the rattle is from the front of the engine behind the radiator. It getting really bad.

does it sound like its inside the engine, possibly the timiing chain. mine does it at around 3400 RPM in any gear. i cant exactly remember when it started, but it calms when i add change to thicker oil. if its similar to that, i have absolutely no idea, except if you did a timing chain replacement. i did about 2.5 years ago. nissan discontinued a tensioner in the engine for the chain, and it didnt come in the kit. i think thats when it started.

yeah the problems seems very similar. I haven't changed to oil to a thicker viscosity yet. will that help it? and yes it is coming from the timing chain area. how much do these cost and how hard are they to replace? thanks for the info

not much $$ at all to replace, but its a days work. the hardest part is timing the cams right and getting everything back in order. i wouldnt do it unless you need to.

I use 20-w50 for oil. its got 180k miles on it. the noise wont go away completely, its just annoying.

Borrow a mechanic's stethescope and pinpoint the noise. If it is under the valve cover, pull it off and see if anything is wrong/out of the ordinary.

does this repair require the engine out of the car? and where exactly if the timing chain? I cant seem to pinpoint the problem.

timing chain is in the front area if you have the DOHC. its inside the case below the valve cover. thats where the noise willl be. its not a difficult thing to do, the most difficult part is timing the engine right again. to need to mark everything and make sure its TDC im sure theres some instructions somewhere. and no, the engine can stay in the bay.
