Hello....I've got a small rattling noise coming from somewhere around the distributor on my 1993 240. I took it to the mechanic because I thought it may be the timing chain. He took off the cover, didn't take it all apart, but he didn't see anything wrong with the timing chain- not even the inner chain. The guides had been removed but that was it. He said he doesn't know what it is but that there is a sound. Does anyone have any idea? Thanks a lot.

As EstoMax said, there are two guides. There's one between the cam sprockets (which is easy to remove) and one that right near the distributor. You have to remove the upper cover to get at that guide, which entails removing the valve cover and distributor.

*Do not* remove any guides on the lower chain.

Thanks a lot for the help...

The upper guides have gone for sure...I dont know how to check if the lower ones are gone or not. I took it to a dealership and they said I should get the chain replaced. I won't get it done there ofcourse, they estimated 1200 for the labor. Crazy.

I just got this 240...I was looking at a porsche 944 '84 as well but I have to say the 240 drives brilliantly.

I guess Ill get the chain replaced. Does anyone around charlottesville know of a good mechanic?
