Rattling/clicking from dashboard/footwell above 2,500 RPM?

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Last Tuesday, driving home from work, something started clicking/rattling from inside the dash or in the drivers footwell around the pedals whenever the RPM's got above about 2,500. It did it the whole way home. The next morning I had to run a couple of errands before I set off on a road trip down to Atlanta, from Philly. I was going to run the car into the dealers (25 miles away) just so they could listen to it and let me know whether it was anything to worry about, before starting a 2,000 mile trip. Typically, it didn't make the noise all morning, so I figured there was no point in taking it in if there was nothing to listen to.

I set off, and 5 minutes after getting on the turnpike, it started again. Luckily I knew there was another Infiniti dealer right at the next exit, so I pulled off, parked, left my engine running and went in to see if someone could come listen. A service manager came out, revved the car, and as before, from 2,500 rpm upwards, something inside the vehicle was clicking. Not a faint, you can barely hear it click, but a definite audible mechanical clicking/ticking/rattle. They took it in, put it on the ramp and checked everything in the engine and under the car but couldn't find anything. They said it def sounds like its coming from inside the dashboard, but without taking the whole dashboard apart couldn't be more specific. They also said it was quite puzzling, as it sounded like the noise some old speedometer cables could make sometimes, but the EX has no mechanical moving parts back there, it's all electronic. They told me it should be fine to drive down to Atlanta and back, but as soon as I get back, have it booked in to look at it.

Yup, you guessed, it hasn't done it since. 2200 miles later, and not one click, rattle or ticking noise. So as before, there is no point taking it in for them to take my dashboard apart for a noise that was there but now isn't.

Anyone else had this intermittent noise?

Btw full kudos to the dealer at Willow Grove, PA for looking at my car and making sure it was fine to drive, right away after I drove in there unexpectedly.

Sounds like it could be what's described in ITB07-007. Check your email.

Did you ever figure this out? My 08 started doing this. Sounds like a bad speedo cable (which I know it does not have).

Yeah, saw the heater core tsb. I'll have to look in to flushing. It has only happened twice so far, but is annoying when it happens.

I'll probably leave it for a while, unless it gets unbearable, and flush when coolant change is due.
