Hard to hear over my exhaust, however when idling it sounds like my engine is tearing itself apart. Alot of clicks and it really sounds like an engine that is about to die, it's got about 130Km's on it and pulls just fine, but I'm worried about any long term damage I may be doing - I'll record a sound clip tomorrow and post it but it just doesn't sound very healthy, anything I should be checking or anything like this common with anyone else?

Cliff notes:---1) Idling the engine sounds like complete and utter ****2) Noisy and clicky almost sounds like the engine is about to die3) What should I be checking? Will post a sound clip tomorrow asap.

Possible sources that come to mind:

-timing chain guide-exhaust heat shield-valve lifters-noisy injectors

All of the above can be explained in depth by searching on the forums. The sound clip should help, though.

If it sounds like a soft "plastic tick" coming from where the injectors are its the injector solenoids ticking.

If its coming from the front of the engine especially by front valve cover. Its your timing chain hitting the guides. Check tensioners and remove guides.

If its coming from above the valve cover its your your valves ticking. This will sound more metallic. I would also check compression to see if valves are sticking.

Hmm - I'll check into that - I've heard about the timing chain problem quite a few times with our cars. I think that just may be it - hopefully nothing with the valves, but I will have the whole car inspected, I don't think im qualified enough to do that myself.
