Question: Sometimes on start up the engine makes a rattle for 1 second and quiets down. It does not happen all the time. I have read that the guides on the t-chain can be noisy. Any thoughts, advice?BTW- oil change intervals every 2K 69K on motor.ps, its not a lifter noise.

update?

for one, there's no timing chain on this engine... you got a belt

ok, now to be helpful since my van started doing the same thing as yours!

check the exhaust hangers by the catalytic converter

apparently, on my vehicle, it got rusted and the metal between the cat & the bar holding the exhaust system up separated

i just used a big hose clamp to quiet it down as a temp fix

jack up on the pass side frame rail and start following the exhaust pipe from the flexjoint... you'll see the cat & hopefully yours got rusted in the same area

'04 and newer Quests have VQ35s, which do have chains and which are indeed known for a light rattle on startup.

The only rattle of that sort that I've experienced was always attributed to heat shields or exhaust hangers.

On the VQ35s if you act soon enough you can just replace the tensioners and you should be good for another while. That's a bit easier than changing the chains, but still the same amount of work to get to it.

there's 2 noises attributed from started up. If its a "RATTLE" noise then its just the main guide and tensioner assembly. if its a "WHINE" noise then its the tensioner shows and secondary chains. Same issue which the RWD 4.0 v6 engines have. I do about 3-5 timing chain jobs a month.

Hey junseimotors, have you done a quest primary timing chain guide and tensioner with the motor in the vehicle?

My previous 1996 Nissan Quest had a rattle during startup. Upon checking, found that my heat shield for my catalytic converter had a bolt missing.
