Started hearing a rattle/clunk just behind and above the left rear seat whenever I hit a bump, or even going over expansion joints on the road. To my (amateur) ears, sounds like the top mount of the shock is loose.Checked in the trunk/hinge area for loose parts, found nothing.

So am thinking about ripping into the rear shock mount, looking at the FSM I gotta pull the seats, pillar trim, and rear deck to get to it. Not much fun in my cold, crowded garage in January..

Has anyone replaced the rear shocks? Are there any shortcuts from the FSM procedure?

Or, any other ideas as to what may be causing this?

thanks,m

I'm not familiar with the Ms at all, but it's possible it's not even something suspension related. If it's more of a rattle and less of a clunk, it might be something like a loose speaker? (Again, no idea how the M is setup, so don't know if that's even possible)

i never replace one on m45, but most of the cars has the same set up.i replaced strut mounts on 3 different cars:96 mustang,02 wrx,02 accord.all of them had the same muted clicking sound, after the fix clicking sound was gone.

good luck.caug.

Hmm Sounds like you boys are going to have jack these cars up and figure it out. I recommend isolating which side the rattle is coming from.

I had a similar issue that lasted 4 weeks and I finally discovered that it was a loose screw in my rear seat cushion on the driver side that I had failed to tighten during a trunk strut installation last summer. This was all after I jacked the car up and poked around. Good luck.
