I have an 04 G35 Coupe 5AT. Bought it used a year ago. I noticed a rattle from the engine bay - very faint. I thought it may be belt related. The car has 60k miles and was due for the a lot of maintenance. To date, I've flush the xmission, changed oil, brakes and plugs. Haven't done the belts yet.

At any rate, over the last few months the rattle has gotten worse. It is very noticeable - not so much from the top area of the engine - but is very noticeable from underneath the car. Seems loudest in the exhaust area around the engine.

Has anyone had a problem similar to this - or have any ideas as to what might be causing the rattle sound? Could it be the catalytic converter? I don't think it's in the valves. I would be able to hear the rattle from the top side of the engine bay - at least I would think this.

Is there any way to provide an audio file in order to listen to the rattle?

Thanks in advance for the help.

You'll have to find a site to host the audio file...or make a you-tube video and supply the link here. In the meantime, please describe the rattle better...what kind of sound does it make?

^ IDK if an audio file is going to be enough here.

In my honest opinion instead of messing around here I would take it to the dealer. If your car is legit it should still have part of the 7/70k powertrain warranty left. I would get it in asap incase there is an actual problem.

In this case there is no substitute for a trained ear.

If you cannot tell whether the noise is coming from the belts (front most part of the engine) or the cats (rear most engine component)you might want to take it to someone who knows, before it gets worse.

I have the same problem on my 04 coupe 5at. I believe it to be a heat shield rattling near the cats because I hear it best from my drivers side door but am unable to hear it from under the hood . No worries just annoying to hear.

i had a rattling heat shield on a 2000 Z71 pickup several years back. i just took the heat shield off.

i would say that it is def the heat shield if the rattling is most noticeable when you are idling, like say, at a bank drive thru or something like that. rarely can you hear it while driving because road and engine noise.

You can also get long metal cable ties that you could use to fasten the shield down. it will not allow it to dissipate hate as easily (its intended purpose) but that may be better than removing it all together. the cable tie can be easily cut and removed later on in the vehicles life.

I don't understand why a faint rattle is a problem? If it is a heat shield or some other piece of metal vibrating with the engine running that is so faint that you can barely hear it, why is that a problem?
Do you have a radio? Tune in turn on & tune out the rattle. :chuckle: Thats what we did back in the......
Aahh the good old days.
No charge for my advice. :)
