so whats the reputation of them?

seems like the shift from 1st to 2nd on my '89 is somewhat of a jerk.

ive test driven other single cam S13s and some twin cams, seems like the singles shifted this way as well, but not the twins.

is this a 'normal' thing? or is it a possible problem? any way to correct it?

the twins will shift that way once they get to be 17 years old...

It all depends on how the transmission was treated and maintained. Most 240 auto transmission's weren't very well maintained.

It's normal... 17 year old transmission, what do you expect?

the transmission, like the rest of the car, was/is treated like royalty. car only had 57k og miles when i picked it up and is just now creeping up on 69k.the car only saw 1200 miles of use in its last year with the PO

~70k don't mean a thing, especially on a car that's as old as some members on this board. Stuff still ages, oxidizes, electronics go bad, etc. Check to make sure that the resistor up in the front of the engine bay is connected. Some folks still seem to believe that "rougher" means "faster" and pull that resistor up front to make the transmission dump into gear. Either that or the resistor could have gone bad too.

Mine used to shift rough, but then I drove it rough for a while, now it shifts smooth.

The 1st to 2nd shift is very firm; it's normal. My 91 240sx also has the 'jerky' 1st to 2nd shift; it's been that way since it was new and now after 160,000 mi, it still does it.

If the dropping resistor was disconnected, there would be extremely hard shifting and the shifts would occur at much higher RPMs.
