This might be a dumb question but whenever i ride with my friend he won't ever turn on the radio. He always tells me it needs gas to run but i never believe him. I want to know does it need gas to run the radio or not? If it does please explain.

Thanks.

no it doesnt need gas to run the radio im not sure why your friend would say that, its run off the battery, you know just like the lights in your car. using your headlights doesnt use up gas now does it lol

Radio is ran by Batt. Batt is charged by Alt. Alt. gains power by car. car is powered by gas. gas is a very silly reason to not play the radio. so tech. it is true that it is ran by gas, but really that is very stupid. ask your friend if he puts high octain would the sound be better? it takes nothing to play the radio unless he is packing 5000 watts and a hell of a system and even then it will not take noticable gas, all he should worry about is his batt.

well, i dont turn on my A/C (i ususally just roll down the windows, however, if a girl is in the car, i wont go that ghetto) because it sucks power from ur car, not much i know, but im picky, anyway, thta is a dumb reason for not turning on the radio, i mean really, i cant stand silence when i drive, music gets me hyped, id have to take the risk of losing that extra .oooooo1 gallons per mile

The engine is going to pull the alternator always so using a the radio to a certain extent does nothing (normal volume). When you start putting a very high load on the alternator then it has to work harder and is harder to turn. therefore using more gas.

The AC pump is always divren by the engine too, but when you turn up the AC you make the pump work harder so it draws more energy from the engine.

basicly your friend is "misinformed", it "wastes" very little gas and driving in the car without music is sooo boring too

I dunno, sometimes I just like to hear "car noises". Not that the sound of a KA24DE humming along is particularly memorable, but it's often better than what's on the radio. Actually, I tend to remove the face plate of my stereo and then forget to put it back on for weeks on end.

Celirus: Perhaps your friend should perform a little test. One week with the radio, one without and check gas mileage each week. Bottom line - your friend is being a bit silly, but maybe he needs to see the proof.

My car picks up more noise from the crappy tires than I actually here from any engine.

The stereo guys in the stereo forum could probaly explain how the stereo makes the alternator work harder but it is hardly any more than the engine is already turning it.

Tell your friend to sell his car (hopefully it isnt a 240) and get a scooter, it will be safer for all of us Im sure.

P.S. If he keeps the car, for Gods sake, make sure he has enough blinker fluid. Got to stay safe!

dayam. . that sounds like ricer mentality there. . .

anyways. . . just being anal here. . . but basically once the car is running, any electrical device in the car is run off current from the alternator. If the electrical load becomes too high for the alternator to handle (like running lights, fog lights, wipers, 1000 watt stereo, ice-cream maker, espresso machine, etc. all at the same time), then current is drawn from both the alternator and the battery. In these extreme cases, the battery acts as a kind of buffer to aid in temporarily supplying any power that the alternator can't support on it's own.

just my two cents. . .
