I just bought my first car, a 1987 300zx. When i bought it the radio worked but a tape needed to be in the player to turn it on. I tried out the steering wheel volume knob and it worked fine but when i pressed the scan button the radio shut off and now doesnt turn on at all. Oddly enough, when i was fixing a loose battery connection the radio kicked back on and worked fine until i shut it off with the power button. So now it doesnt work. Any suggestions?

well...are your battery cables in good shape? do you have a good ground to the chassis and the engine? I'd make sure yout have a direct ground connection to the engine as well as the chassis ans if it's still giving you grief you might try making your own small grounding strap and screw it to one of the case screws on the body of the stereo and run it to a good chassis grouns, I had similar issue with an aftermarket stereo once, first I ran the harness ground to a chassis ground without success then got a small peice of wire with ring terminals at each end and grounded the chassis of the stereo to the chassis of the car

and welcome to nico!

My father's 87 did the same thing with the wheel controlls and we never did figure out why... But to get the stereo to turn back on there where only 2 things we could figure out... disconnect the battery and let it sit for a day or so.. or take the radio out and disconnect the wires... you can try the fuses but we suspect its got something to do with the station memory power supply too..
