man... I have the same problem. I thought it was the plastic peice that covers the steering column or the dash. It's exactly at 3k too! It's wierd ...AND ANNOYING. Doesn't it seem like it's this really annoying guy saying "SHIFT"?

it could still be the exhaust. I had a problem like that a few years ago, took a muffler shop guy about 45 seconds and it was fixed.

As the engine revs at different speeds it produces different vibration frequencies, and depending on where things are in the car and how they're mounted/fixed, they will resonate differently at different engine speeds.

Right now I have solid engine mounts, you'd be amazed how the rattling shifts from one place to the other as the engine revs.
