Valentine. From sportbikes to sports cars, the general concensus is Valentine, hands down.

You're not going to get a good radar detector for $50.

There are two good ones that are made: Passport 8500 and Valentine One. They're both basically the same thing, people who use one or the other defend their choice like religious zealots.

I had a passport 8500 and loved it with a passion. I'll probably get a V1 this time around just to see what it's like :)

You get what you pay for.

I don't normally say/believe that, unfortunately, radar detectors are one of the things that it does apply to.

Don't cheap out on one. Buying a $50 detector is a waste of $50 that could be saved for a better one or spent elsewhere.

If you insist on going cheap, get something made by Bel or Escort. Both are owned by Cincinatti Microwave, the company that basically developed the field of radar detection.

Either you want to avoid tickets and spend the money up front, or you spend money on the front and back ends, i.e. pay the merchant a little, the cops a little more, and the insurance some too.

One nice thing about Valentines are they allow you to upgrade them with updates, and that's just one thing.

I'd just recommend driving within reasonable speeds, and being alert (watching the brake lights of cars up the road, watching around bridges and overpasses). In some states radar detectors are illegal, and most state police/highway patrols use state of the art radar or even laser detectors, and most laser detectors don't even give you a warning until you've already been nailed.

Save your money. Tell you the truth, the only ticket I ever got was when I was using a radar detector. My detector was older (this was back in '91) and the state police hit me with one of the "instant" radars, and while I got the signal, it was too late. Now they all have lasers, and it's about the same thing.

cops dont use radars these days... they all use laser (at least in NY area and MI area where I live)...

If I were you I would get a high quality laser jammer and an ok performing radar detector just incase some cops do still use radar
