Obey the law and you don't need one.

That was quick, figure there would be at least a few post before the don't speed one.. The Versa is not a race car, but must places around here everyone is over the limit at some point.

Anyway... There are ton and tons on the market. I have tried almost every one. The 3 that I like are the Valentine One, Escort 9500xi and the Escort 8500x50.

All 3 IMO are the best available, all are upgradable and one has GPS (very nice for marking false locations and known areas)

They are not cheap, but then again so is one hit on your insurance.

Good luck

Yeah, but there's a difference between going with traffic at 5 over and going fast enough to need a radar detector. The saying of cops around here: "Five is fine, nine you're mine."

Agree with going with traffic... that is what the Versa is for. It's not a car to wip in and out of traffic with. Here traffic can be 15+ over. when they decide to be out, its like catching fish in a barrel. When they are out... 5 will get you a fine.

then again... this is VA, the only place Radar Detectors are illegal in the entire country. They just don't play nice in these parts.

I have used a radar detector, but I haven't put it in my Versa. It isn't really foolproof by any means, but it is a neat little gadget to have sometimes.

As for speeding, around here you will get the finger if you aren't doing at least ten over, if not more. Especially from people with Massachusetts plates that are up here in New Hampshire on vacation.

I thought radar detectors where illegal everywhere, I was told that when you get pulled over your just supposed to unplug them.. but that could just be my family saying, "They are a waste of money, you don't need to be speeding anyways. Let alone get in trouble for using one."

They like to beat around the bush on subjects. lol

I'v always wanted to get one but don't want to buy a cheap $60 one, but than again I don't want to spend $400 on one either.. haha

As long as you aren't one of those guys driving white Escalades and Denalis that always try and run locals off the road, then we have no problems.

Quote » I thought radar detectors where illegal everywhere, [/quote]Nope, only in certain areas. However, if you really want one I would recommend just buying one at a pawn shop. They are not useful enough to warrant spending anything over $30 in my opinion.

So i guess after creating the topic i never shared my opinion on them...

I dont think theres any harm in getting a radar detector other then in VA and DC? (i believe where its illegal). If you have the budget for one, go for it, if not...w.e. The 100 percent benefit of having a radar detector (one thats got mostly new technology) is that when your driving along and not paying attention, the radar detector can alert the driver with sound of an oncoming cruiser or work zone etc. If you go to forums where they discuss different radar detectors, people claim some of the expensive ones can catch cops from like 2 miles away (thats BS) while others claim they saw the cop before the radar detector alerted them...well what if your driving in yeehaw country where your not exactly paying attention to the speedometer and theres really no traffic to flow with...just an extra benefit. The 60 dollar blinky box just saved you 300 big ones.

Im not one to speed heavily. Im mainly with the traffic and ever since Ive been getting low milage have kept the driving to under 70mph. But I know there are times where its good to have the added assurance that I have something to help protect me.

plus the new ones look pretty cool. another way to accessorize the V

About 8 years ago I was living in PA and went to RadioShack where they had some. The guy claimed they were being banned in PA so they were on clearance for like $20. Picked one up and it seemed to work okay, but it was kind of annoying that it'd beep every time I was near a grocery store (automatic doors set it off) or near an electronic road sign, and plus when it beeped as I passed a cop it meant he already hit you radar with it anyway. Never got a ticket with it though. Ironically, the day it stopped working is the day I got an 85 in a 65 speeding ticket. 8 years later I'm a safer driver and reduced the weight of my lead foot so I don't see the need for one.

Radar detectors are by and large useless now as they don't give enough warning anymore. Back in the day a cop would point a radar gun that was always on and throwing around all kinds of stray signals that the detector would pick up, whether he was aiming at you or not. These days they use laser which can shoot pulses that are very direct to the vehicle they are aiming at. You could be driving next to a vehicle being hit with a laser and your detector may not even go off. Also, if yours goes off, its a safe bet you were already caught speeding.

New technology does offer some perks now associated with a radar detector that has police pissed anew. They now can be updated to warn you of red light and speeding camera locations, seen in the link provided.

If all else fails, move here to Ohio. The police have to be out in the open with their headlights on or it's considered entrapment. If you can't see that, you shouldn't be driving.

I say just do the speed limit. I know it sounds like a lame answer but it's an easy way to not have to spend any money at all. I've noticed I don't really get anywhere any faster and let the impatient bastard behind you get mad and fly by you and get pulled over. That's happened to me once. I laughed at him.

Radar detectors are not worth anything. They don't give you a warning ahead of time, by time it warns you the cop has already clocked you. And if your area is one of them, alot of areas are now using Laser. You do know a radar can not pick that up? THen well your screwed when it catches you.

Just stick around the limit, nothing is that important to speed. 5 over is the most I do, and thats just on the interstate and outside the inner city.
