I'm looking to buy a radar detector, and I was wondering what some good ones were, i wouldn't mind spending around 400 for a good one because i don't want a cheap crappy one, any ideas?

What do they X, K, and Ka letters mean or stand for, doesn't like K mean there's a cop or something?

K/KA band is the most common for cops. V is laser, and if you get that then you're screwed, lol

Either Escort 8500, ir this years model is the solo, it's the same except a year newer and cordless.

Or Valentine V1.

those are the 2 best without upgrading to a scrambler.

Both people with either swear on their brand, but I'm pretty sure the Valentines are a step up, definately a step up in price!

K, X, and Ka are just letters to represent the certain band of radio frequency the radar uses.

only problem is, cops are getting smarter, as hard as it may be to believe, plus theres supposedly something called instant on, so they just hit u once, and its too late, your caught, it happened to me, radar went off, i slowed down, car turned its lights on, so yea, it detected the radar, but too little too late (in my town however, the cops like to have their radars on while patroling, so you can detect them from blocks away, before your even on the same street) btw, i got a K40, works nicely, however, i got mine for $40, not the 300 MSRP,

I've got a Valentine. I've had it for about 5 years and absolutly love it.

If you get a V1, it comes with a manual that explains everything about radar, how it works, how laser works, etc etc.

There are some features I like about the Escort a lot better, but none of them outpower the value of arrows in my opinion.

You are screwed with laser because the only way a detector can pick up laser is if it actually hits the car.

As for instant on, yeah, that sucks. However, you can sometimes get lucky and pick up radar from the cop intant-oning a car ahead of you.

One thing to remember, a radar detector does not protect you from speeding tickets. It only reduces them.

I also heartily endorse the Valentine 1. It has saved me on a bunch of occasions. Purchase on-line at: http://www.valentine1.com ...
