I have never owned one and was wondering how reliable are they at detecting the latest and greatest that the cops are using? For example, what about the Cobra XRS-9330 12-Band Radar/Laser Detector that goes for 55$ on Amazon? It has good reviews.I get 1 ticket per year on average and am currently paying a bit more for insurance because of this, so it seems like a good idea to get one.

You get what you pay for. Id go Valentine or Escort. I had a Cobra once. It sucked.

I agree with adidas2go. Escort recently released their new model the 9500i which is around $425 on Amazon. Valentine dropped their price from $500 to $400 on their main website. I would go with the Escort 8500 x50 because it has a reasonable price for its performance, plus spending 250 on a radar will save you hundreds of dollars worth of tickets in the future! :D

Also remember some police dept now use a laser speed gun. I don't think there are reliable laser detectors yet. By the time it's on your they are already getting your speed...

Trust me. They are reliable. My Escort passport 8500 lets out this schrill squeal and lights up in "LASER" when you or someone near you is being spotted. Scared the crap out of me the first time it went off. I almost had a mild heart attack.

My buddy got one on ebay for like $150, so they can be had for less than retail if you don't mind it used.

And a $55 detector will annoy the hell out of you because it probably doesn't filter out all the automatic doors and garage door openers and radio towers, etc.

Beltronics RX65 all the way

BTW, if you get a laser warning, it means you have already been hit with the gun. In other words, there is no warning with a laser alert.

Top end Bel, top end Escort (made by Bel) or the Valentine V1.

Anything else and you may as well go without

+1 on both counts, I have a Bel RX65 Pro, and it has saved me more than a few times, not so much that I was speeding, just that a little reminder once in a while is a good thing.

I have had an Escort Solo S2 since 2004 and it has saved my butt many o times...and yeah when it sees Laser and goes off,you about have a coronary, although I'm pretty sure no matter what detector by the time the Laser goes off they have you nailed.

Do yourself a favor and spend some time reviewing these web sites:

http://www.radartest.com/http://www.radardetector.net/

A lot of radartest articles are pay-to-download, but there is enough info in there to get a pretty good idea about what detectors are good and which suck ***. As well as how speed detection works, and related info.

i just sold my valentine 1 and picked up a escort 8500 x50. got it for 150$ from a police auction. I also got veil spray for my head lights. it gives the cop with a laser gun a significant delay for them to get a reading.

http://www.laserveil.com/i think the veil spray is useless unless you have a good radar/laser detector to go with it.

get a system that is radar detector and a radar blocker, assuming its not illegal in your state. for instance the phaser2 is actually a pretty good system my parents have it in their cars

After an hour of reading... LBC comes thru with the "laymans" info.....Get one of these radar detectors: Bel rx65 or STi.... or the Escort 8500...

In addition, drop the extra hundo and get Veil paint for the headlights and plates... then double the protection by throwing a Laser Shield cover ontop of it...

are you saying there is no such device that prevents a cops radar gone from getting a reading? that is false there are devices that do that and they are illigal in all states bc they operate on radio waves that are controlled by the fcc and to operate on those frequency you need a licence. as for laser is just a light and is not regulated by the FCC and they are only illigal in 9 states.

if radar jammers do not exist, then why are you advising to get a jammer?

Laser jammer is correct :-)

They are illegal in 3 states, maybe more, check guysoflidar.com (BEST, MOST UNBIASED reviews of all systems, radar and laser...)

Remember, these items are just tools, so if you go out and speed, get a signal, slow down, signal drops off, and you pound the pedal - you're going to have a bad time!

lol

Learn to use these tools, and that is all they are, just tools..

There are methods that officers use to catch people speeding such as VASCAR (timing you from one point to another - no radar/laser/detection)

Pacing - where they follow you, or drive in front of you for a certain distance at a certain speed then pull you over... no detection

Laser - Hard to detect, which is why the jammer is needed

Radar - Easy to detect assuming they have constant on.

Constant on - radar gun is ALWAYS ON

Instant on - Radar gun is triggered with a button or trigger or switch whenever the officer sees someone they think is speeding - hard to detect - if you have a good detector you will see this a couple miles away (RX65 Pro), assuming the officer sees someone they think is speeding...

Remember, slow down, buckle up, if you get an alert drive the limit for 5 miles at least, if you are on an extremely long flat road like in texas or so - 11 miles will be your warning...

VASCAR nailed me once, thank goodness I got out of it with a "disobediance to traffic control device"..25 plus cost s came to 102.50 no points...this is in PA. Interesting fact about PA, only Police allowed to use Radar or Laser are State Troopers. Local Police use VASCAR.

in your hood they vascar... round these parts (NY NJ highways) they always use Ka/X... and ONCE i got nailed with laser by nj statie....

Ive actually gotten 2 tickets that i fought and lost... no radar at all... they make the cops take a 5 minute class... give them a fancy certificate... and then they say they are certified to EYEBALL speed +/- 5 mph.... what a crock... im still getting this veil paint and putting those 3 radars on my hanukka harry list.

LOL, when I 1st got my Z in early '03 I got pulled over in Salem County (South Jersey), for the same crap, but never got cited..."do you know how fast you were going" I said yup, I even have digital read out I was doing 34-35MPH..."ok well take it easy, ok"...a$$bag! I really think the local yokal wanted to see what type of car it was, the Staties we had at the Power Plant were real cool with me though we used to B.S. all the time.

One thing I noticed everytime I woent South on I-95 and was crossing over the Susquehanna I always got a Laser alarm...anyone else?
