Honestly, save your money. The less expensive ones aren't worth it. After some savings, pick up an Escort or Valentine1.

Buy cheap you buy twice!

Why do you need it?

Do not enter the state of Virginia with one. You'll end up with friendly inmates

Add $100 to your 401k or IRA instead

This is solid advice!! Don't waste your money on a cheapo unit...especially since it sounds like your a little strapped for cash... save and buy a decent one!

You are wasting your money on a cheap one. Even the $400+ ones may not save you? Read up on radar detectors. If you speed and get a ticket your insurance company is going to ask you for $$$$$$Place Chica in your address book. You may need her or one of her associates one day?

Just my $.02

I have an escort 8500 and I am really happy with it. I paid about 200 for a used one on e-bay and has been working good for over a year. Here is a link for one at $150. It is a refurb but it says it comes with a warranty. It is at least a little closer to your budget.

Does your local have instant on? If so, you might be wasting money. As far as speeding goes, it's pretty easy to do in a G. Try the cruise control when you can. We've got several long, divided streets around here with 40 to 45 mph zones, and cops hiding around the corners with radar. I use the cruise control and don't give the speed a second thought.

Unfortunitely, she directed a few unwarranted expletives towards a staff member. That violates the TOS.

Beltronics does make good detectors, but I have the $250-$300 one. I can't even count the number of times it has saved me. Would 100% recommend it too.

Also having a detector is better than not having one. I actually bought my g/f the $30 cobra one from walmart and it has really helped her and she likes it.

i have a cobra xrsr9g its a little more then what you want to spend but the unit itself with out the gps feature is a little cheaper i think its called the xrsr7. I have heard people saying that cobras arent good etc etc but i have had this and a beltronics and i like this better. It also picks up instant on/pop which i encountered when i was driving through NJ couple weeks ago.

I have both the Valentine One and the Escort X50. Both are great units. The Valentine has the arrows and the Escort is less noisy.

If you do a lot of city, I would get the Escort. If you drive a lot of highway, get the Valentine.

I believe with both companies, you can try for 30 days and then send one back.

Be CAREFUL of Laser!!! Neither units have alerted me before I was targeted.
